- Conclusion: AMD RX 460 or GTX 1050?
Choosing a graphics card to renew our gaming equipment is not an easy task given the large number of options available to us and the fierce battle between AMD and Nvidia. Within the entry range of both companies we can find the Radeon RX 460 and the GeForce GTX 1050, two excellent cards that are very efficient with the use of energy and with enough power for less demanding and casual gamers. Which of them is the best option? Do not miss our comparison.
GeForce GTX 1050 vs Radeon RX 460: specifications
The Radeon RX 460 uses a Polaris 11 GPU that is manufactured by Global Foundries at 14nm FinFET and consists of a total of 14 Compute Units totaling 896 Stream Processors, 56 TMUs and 16 ROPs at a maximum frequency in its reference model of 1, 266 MHz. This GPU is accompanied by 2 GB of GDDR5 memory with a 128-bit interface and a bandwidth of 112 GB / s. All this with a reduced 75W TDP that allows it to work without any power connector although some custom versions will use a 6-pin connector to improve stability and overclock margin.
On the other hand, the GeForce GTX 1050 is based on a Pascal GP107 GPU that adds a total of 640 CUDA Cores, 40 TMUs and 32 ROPS that operate at a maximum frequency in its reference model of 1354 Mhz in base mode and 1455 Mhz in turbo mode. As for memory we also find GB of GDDR5 memory with a 128-bit interface and a bandwidth of 112 GB / s. Pascal's high energy efficiency means that a core like this card consumes only 75W, so the history of AMD's solution is repeated, it does not require any power connector to function. This core is manufactured with TSMC's 16nm FinFET process.
We recommend reading our guide to the best graphics cards.
If we see the specifications it may seem that the GeForce GTX 1050 is superior, especially for its number of ROP units in which it reaches to double the Radeon. However, remember that they are two very different architectures and cannot be directly compared. Traditionally Nvidia has shown that its architecture is more efficient and is capable of achieving more performance with lower a priori specifications.
Gaming testing and performance environment
The tests have been done using a team consisting of an Intel Core i7 6800k processor overclocked at 4.1 Ghz, 32 GB of CORSAIR Vengeance LPX DDR4 2666MHz memory, an Asus X99A-II motherboard, a Crucial MX100 512GB SSD, a Seagate 2TB SSHD and a Cooler Master V1200 Platinum power supply. The cards in question have been the Sapphire NITRO OC RX 460 and the EVGA GTX 1050 SSC.
Conclusion: AMD RX 460 or GTX 1050?
Both cards are an excellent choice for tight budgets, offer very similar performance, and are perfectly valid for full HD gaming with a medium level of graphic detail. Whichever you choose you are going to get the best possible return for the money invested.
