AMD CEO Lisa Su completed her presence at Computex 2016 with an engineering sample of a Summit Ridge processor in her hands. His confirmed some of the key features of AMD's new generation of high-performance processors that will go head-to-head with Intel Skylake.
AMD Summit Ridge, everything that is known so far
Summit Ridge processors are based on the Zen microarchitecture to offer up to 8 cores and 16 processing threads. AMD has confirmed that Zen has SMT technology that allows each physical core to handle two threads of data, something that Intel already implemented years ago with its HT technology.
Summit Ridge and Zen have been developed from the ground up to deliver a huge up to 40% improvement in performance per clock cycle (IPC) versus the Excavator microarchitecture found in the new Bristol Ridge APUs.
Both Summit Ridge and Bristol Ridge will share the new AM4 socket, which in turn will serve the next generation of Raven Ridge APUs with Zen microarchitecture, Polaris graphics and HBM memory to deliver excellent performance on a single chip. AMD4 is the premiere of AMD with DDR4 memory and the transfer of a greater number of elements to the processor itself, all the logic responsible for the PCI-Express 3.0, USB and SATA bus, among others, will be from AM4 included in the processor for a better performance and higher efficiency.
