Crucial BX300 technical specifications

Unboxing and design

Crucial makes a simple presentation with a small compact cardboard box. On the cover we quickly visualize the model and size that we have purchased. In our case, we have chosen the 240 GB model, we would have liked to bring you the 512 GB version. But it seems that Crucial cares very little about Spain… but since they sell very well throughout Europe, they do not need to send anything to the Spanish media…?

While in the back area they indicate the contents of the box and a URL where we can download the cloning software.

Once we open the box we find the following bundle:

  • Crucal BX300 SSD. 7mm to 9.5mm adapter. Acronis True Image HD key to migrate all the information from our old SSD disk. Instruction manual.

The Crucal BX300 SSD features a compact design with a 2.5-inch format and a thickness of 7 mm. On its front we find the BX large letter screen printing and a nice blue gradient.

Internally, the Crucal BX300 incorporates a high-performance controller, such as the Silicon Motion SM2258 and the 32-layer Micron MLC 3D memory chips that make a total of 256 GB in this unit. The benefits change according to the model, but only in the random reading (IOPS), with a higher performance in the top of the range, that is, the 512 GB model).

The Crucal BX300 it reaches a reading of 555 MB / s and a writing of 5 10 MB / s. On 4KB Random read we have 84K IOPS and 90K IOPS write which are quite far from NVMe drives. Its durability is estimated at 1.5 million hours and the company supports us with 24/7 3-year warranty support.

We find the resistance of the discs in their different versions quite interesting. For example, the smallest 128 GB disk has 55 TBW, while this 256 GB model has 80 TBW and the largest 512 GB takes twice as much with 160 TBW. Obviously it would compensate us to acquire the largest possible model.

We recommend reading our guide on how to optimize an SSD in Windows 10.

It is not difficult to install this SSD on our computer. It is as simple as connecting a power SATA connection and a data connection. We always recommend doing it on SATA III connections, but in case you have an older version it is fully compatible.

For the tests we will use the native controller of the Z370 chipset on a mid-range board: Gigabyte Z370 Ultra Gaming. Our tests will be performed with the following performance software.

Crucial Storage Executive Management Software

Crucial offers us the possibility of installing the Crucial Storage Executive application , which allows us to monitor, perform quick maintenance and quickly configure our SSD with our operating system.

We really liked the interface, although somewhat old, but it is quite effective. At all times it indicates with a green bar if the SSD is in good health or has any abnormality. We also found the “ momentum cache ” function interesting, which allows us to improve the speed of the system when using a laptop and its autonomy.

Final words and conclusion about Crucial BX300

The Crucial BX300 arrives to eat the market of the best SSDs of the moment at the best possible price . Unlike other series and manufacturers, it incorporates an MLC controller in its mid-range SSD, along with high-performance memories such as the 32-layer Micron MLC 3D.

As we have seen in our tests we have obtained the promised read and write rates: 555 MB / s and a write of 5 10 MB / s. Although what we liked the most is its resistance and the 3-year warranty.

It is curious that its mid-range incorporates better components than the high-end: Crucial MX300. This model incorporates TLC memories instead of MLC. We would not be surprised if a new revision comes out soon with components to match the previous MX series.

Currently we can buy this SSD from 61 euros to 145 euros. We believe it is the best quality / price ratio for mid-range SSDs. Without a doubt, it will be one of our fixes in the recommended gaming settings on our website.
