Today we are going to talk about another program that you may have seen on different networks and news: CrystalDiskMark. We use this program to test our hard drives and often use it to show the characteristics of some memory units.

What is CrystalDiskMark ?
Something to note is that we can download a version called Shizuku Edition . We find it somewhat peculiar, since it is the same program, but with a blue background with an anime girl.
However, you may be thinking: "There are quite a few programs that do this same function, what does it have that sets it apart?" . You are right and, in fact, we recently talked about ATTO Disk Benchmark . What differentiates these two programs so that both deserve to be used?
What is special about this program?
One of the key points that we think makes CrystalDiskMark special is its default settings. Similar to what Apple does, the interface is intuitive and on the initial screen offers the user the most common things that they can want.
While other programs offer you a toolbox, here they give you a premade machine where you only have to press a button. However, the program does not stop there, since we can edit its tests by changing an acceptable number of parameters. Unfortunately, some such as which test is sequential and which random cannot be changed.
Next, we will briefly analyze the characteristics of your main screen. In this window we can differentiate:
- Number of Tests (5): The number of times the test is performed to have reliable data. Test Size (1GiB): The size of the file to transport. The bigger, more difficult and long the test. However, the result will be better, since it will tell us how memory performs with heavy workloads. Disc for the Test (C: 53% (247 / 464GiB)): As you can imagine, we chose the disc on which we want to do the tests. Start of Tests (5 Buttons): These buttons start each test individually except for the 'All' button which will serve to execute them all sequentially.
To edit the test configuration we can access the Configuration> Queues and Rows option (in the upper toolbar). There the following screen will be displayed and we will be able to edit how many data queues we want and how many threads we want them to be running.
Also, if we change the queues or threads on that screen, the buttons in the main window will also change. Therefore, the names of the buttons are like this, since they refer to the Number of Queues (Q + Number) and Number of Threads (T + Number) . On the other hand, Seq will appear above if it is sequential write / read or 4KiB if it is random write / read .
Then we will go on to talk about the other options we have.
General program options
Although these options are not as important as the configuration of the tests, it is recommended to know them to interact more easily with the program.
As usual, we start from the left and end on the right, although to facilitate its understanding a little more we will divide it into two parts. On the one hand, we will have the options that can serve us as utility and in the second group we will have the secondary or visual options.
Useful options
The first of the options that we will see is File .
Here we only have three very simple options that you can access through the shortcuts that they show you.
- Copy literally serves to copy the information on the main screen. To put the copied text into practice, simply use the Ctrl + V shortcut or the paste option. Saving is a similar function, but instead of saving the information in the input buffer to be able to paste it, what it does is save it in a text file. Exiting is used to close the program and close all its processes.
Continuing the queue, we have the Configuration option.
In Test Data we have two options: Default or All 0x00. This option is only for SSDs and changes the way it transmits data a bit. In general lines we recommend you keep the default option.
As we have already told you, this application is moderately better known since it is often used to perform quick benchmarks. Both at Computex 2019 and in subsequent leaks about memories, you will have seen it running more than once.
And you, what do you think of the CrystalDiskMark design? What option would you add if you could? Share your ideas in the comment box.
