4K displays are beginning to be seen as an option for the most tech-savvy sector, for moviegoers and gamers who are looking for the best audiovisual experience and who can afford it financially. For a while now, the costs to be able to play video games in 4K resolution are increasingly cheaper. In this article we are going to try to figure out how much we should spend to be able to enjoy any video game at this resolution, titles of the graphic quality of The Witcher 3, Rise of the Tomb Raider or The Division.

How much does it cost to update your PC to play in 4K?

Monitor

First of all, keep in mind that 4K differs better on a good-sized screen, a 28-inch monitor onwards is the most recommended option.

Currently the cheapest 28-inch 4K screens that we can find are the Samsung U28E590D (365 dollars) and the AOC U2879VF (350 dollars), although these are with TN panels, enough for most, with a response time of 1 ms and 60Hz refresh rate but with a somewhat limited viewing angle.

If we want a higher quality IPS screen and extended viewing angle, LG 27UD58-B is recommended and costs about 430 dollars today. The three monitors we have mentioned are compatible with AMD FreeSync technology, making them special for video games.

Graphic card

Just as the costs of monitors have been reduced, graphics cards have evolved in recent times and can now display games at 4K resolution more or less freely. The first graphics that could reach 4K in current games were the Nvidia Titan X, GTX 980 Ti and AMD Fury X, although not in the most optimal way and they were not the cheapest either.

Currently, Nvidia's GTX 1070 and GTX 1080 graphics cards can offer video games at 4K resolution and in the case of 1080, depending on the game, it exceeds or stays close to 60 frames per second. We can also add to the equation the AMD Fury X that continues to fight in this field and the Titan X, both can offer games at 4K and 30Fps without too many complications.

If we go to the prices in Spain, a GTX 1080 is obtained for 750 euros (approx), GTX 1070 for 470 euros and the Fury X for 650 euros.

Conclusions

Of course we are omitting the issue of the processor, in this case we assume that the best option will be a new generation Intel Core i7, although there are no major differences with an Intel Core i5, which on average is a difference of 5% of video game performance in favor of the i7.

In this way we can assume that an upgrade of your computer to play at 4K resolution would cost a minimum of 800 euros between the graphics card (GTX 1070) and a 28-inch monitor that supports that resolution. If it still seems too expensive, it is best to wait until next year where prices will drop even more and AMD's response is still needed with its VEGA graphics, which will surely make people talk.
