Ddr3 vs ddr4 is it worth upgrading to ddr4 memory?

DDR3 vs DDR4: They can't work together

One of the main differences between DDR3 and DDR4 is the loss of compatibility with previous memory standards. The former uses a 240-pin connector and the latter 288 pins. A DDR3 compatible motherboard and CPU cannot work with DDR4 memory and vice versa.

DDR4 is faster

On paper, DDR4 works with 30% higher working frequencies than DDR3. In the first case, the maximum working frequency is 2, 133 MHz, in DDR4 it rises to 3, 200 MHz.

DDR4 uses lower voltages

DDR4 requires consumption ranging from 1.35, 1.2, 1.1 and 1.05 volts. Lower than the voltages required by DDR3 memory, which ranges from 1.5 to 1.35. These lower voltages allow to lower energy consumption and increase the working frequency while maintaining stability.

Both cost similar

Currently an 8GB DDR3 or DDR4 memory costs approximately 50 euros, it could be said that they cost the same but you have to repair one detail. To use DDR4 memories we will have to change the motherboard, this brings us directly to the last point.

Is it worth taking the leap?

Although there is a gain in performance, this is minimal, as revealed at the time by some benchmarks published here. In addition, to make the jump from DDR3 memory to DDR4, we must separately disburse the new motherboard compatible with this type of memory.
