Last year Microsoft announced the Surface Duo, a folding screen device that is inspiring other manufacturers to make their own models with this type of concept. Today, Dell has detailed two concept designs that it is working on and that demonstrate that they are harnessing the potential of foldable PCs.

Dell Ori and Duet are two prototypes of folding devices

Dell showed off two folding prototypes, the Ori and the Duet. As concepts, we do not know when or if they will be released. But what it does tell us is that even more major PC vendors are currently contemplating a future in which consumers will have another option when it comes to choosing on their PC screen outside of resolution, touch capabilities, size and the refresh rate.

Ori

Ori is named for the art of folding origami paper. While this PC won't bend into a paper crane, it does offer the kind of portability those interested in a foldable PC are likely to crave.

Dell doesn't share a lot of specs as it's still working on the design, but the Ori concept seen included a 13-inch touchscreen that allowed four-finger play. It's also OLED, which targets deep blacks, excellent color, and probably a high price. Of course Dell can choose a cheaper panel type if it really brings the Ori to market.

With its book view or the ability to switch to clamshell mode and view a long screen, Dell sees users using this device for tasks such as reading magazines, opening multiple windows, or making video calls while taking notes.

Duet

The Duet already has a lot more functionality than the Ori just in the way it's built. The prototype we saw included an ingenious snap-on keyboard, which causes the screen to move up so that the text is not hidden underneath. When not in use, the keyboard fits conveniently on the back.

Unlike Ori's OLED display, the 13.4-inch display was made with an LCD panel.

The value of many of these devices will depend on how well the design works with the applications. Microsoft is already working on Windows 10X, a specific operating system (OS) for folding PCs, although Dell did not confirm that it would use that system.

If Dell starts selling foldable PCs soon, you may have to face the likes of the Surface Neo. The Microsoft foldable is supposed to arrive during the 2020 holiday season and also uses a keyboard accessory and book-like design. There's also Lenovo's foldable PC, which looks pretty much like the Ori and also has a 2020 release date. OS we'll keep you posted.
