The new Intel Skylake-X processors are very powerful, of that there is no doubt but it seems that not everything is pink with the new HEDT X299 platform. The professional overclocker der8auer has cataloged the VRM of the new platform as a disaster, as it easily reaches excessively high temperatures of 100ºC or more.

Intel X299 has VRM issues

der8auer claims that much of the blame lies with Intel that it did not provide data to motherboard manufacturers early enough, something that has been exacerbated by bringing the arrival of the platform forward from August to June due to the threat of AMD Ryzen and Threadripper. Intel has been without competition for too many years, so it has gotten used to the good and now is when the problems come.

The prestigious overclocker complains about the lack of consistency in the quality of the VRM components and the heatsinks used by the motherboard manufacturers. der8auer tested one of the new processors with a Gigabyte Aorus motherboard and was unable to hit 4.6 GHz with a processor that easily goes up to 5 GHz.

One of the biggest problems was the VRM heatsink which acts more like an insulator than a heat conductor or that's what the overclocker thought until he put a small fan on the heatsink and the problem was fixed. He has also complained that many boards include only an 8-pin EPS connector, which is insufficient to power the CPU and causes the connector to reach an insane temperature of 65ºC.

Intel HEDT platforms are always sold as the best option for overclocking, something that in X299 can be affirmed less and less by processors with a very high power consumption, coupled with a poor design in the VRM system of the motherboards and some processors that come with the IHS without soldering.
