CRT monitors
To understand the differences between LCDs and LEDs, we have to go back to the era of CRTs, displays based on cathode ray tubes. LCD technology came to replace the old and heavy CRT televisions with new ones much thinner and lighter, based on a liquid crystal display and a fluorescent tube based back light source, which was still based on fluorescent tubes.
The light from the fluorescent tubes passes through the liquid crystal panel, this light is guided by electricity, and depending on this and filters creates the desired color for each pixel, obviously this is a very simple explanation, but that serves the purpose of this post. The important thing is to understand that LCD panels need a rear light source.
LED TVs
The next evolution came with LED televisions. In these , the same liquid crystal panel is maintained as in the case of LCDs, which had made a big difference in the transition from CRT to LCD. The big change in LED TVs has to do with the rear light source, as fluorescent tubes are replaced by LEDs.
This change allows TVs to be made even thinner than LCDs and lighter, the use of LED technology also allows to show more vivid colors and deeper blacks, with a higher level of contrast, which translates into a smoother and cleaner image. To make matters worse, this technology consumes much less energy than fluorescent tubes and is more durable. LED displays also offer wider viewing angles than those based on fluorescent tubes.
LED technology also makes it possible to manufacture panels with a higher refresh rate, in the case of monitors, rates of 240 Hz are already being reached, resulting in a huge image smoothness when playing.
Final words and conclusion
In conclusion we can say that the difference between an LCD screen and an LED screen is only in the rear light source. In the case of the first, the light source is based on fluorescent tubes, while in the second, it is based on LED diodes, which offer many advantages so that fluorescent tubes are no longer used. Here ends our post on the difference between LCD and LED screen, you can leave a comment if you have something to add.
