Although they may not sound much to you, there are a good number of AMD heatsinks in the builds of many users. Thanks to the fact that they come "as a gift" with almost all the processors of the brand, it is not strange to come across one. Therefore, here we are going to explain the different models that exist and what are their greatest strengths and differences.

The power of ventilation
In almost any type of equipment you assemble, you are going to need some form of active cooling for your processor, but why. How important is cooling in a computer?
Efficient ventilation system
Well the answer is rather clear. As a component heats up, it begins to make more and more miscalculations. Also, if it reaches a temperature limit, we may suffer from thermal throttling , so the part limits performance so as not to suffer damage.
This is where heatsinks, liquid coolers and other cold appliances come in. These small systems serve to allow our components to perform at their best without suffering from thermal throttling.
Normally, these systems work constantly and do not stop until the equipment is turned off. Not surprisingly, lately we see technologies that challenge this premise such as the stop of fans or passive heatsinks. After all, energy efficiency is always a goal to beat in the computer and technology industry.
The point is that in the market we have a lot of models and we cannot determine with certainty which one is the best. For this reason, we are going to talk about a very specific line of heatsinks so that you know if they fit or not what you want. Today you will get to know AMD heatsinks in depth .
AMD heatsinks
There are components that come with pre-installed cooling modules such as the graphics card or many models of RAM . At Computex 2019 we even saw some models of M.2 PCIe Gen 4 SSDs with passive heatsinks, to give you an idea.
However, for processors, the closest we can find are AMD heatsinks , since they come in the same box as the CPU . You can use stock systems, buy a better model, or even build your own custom refrigeration. But before we replace it, what can we expect from these heatsinks, you may wonder.
The truth is that they are parts assembled with a relatively simple structure and only one or two models stand out above the average. However, these components usually offer us a very adequate performance for the price we pay.
Each heatsink has a specific power and will come with a processor whose power dissipation is consistent. Following this line, the best processors of the company will receive the best AMD heatsinks, while the most humble will receive more rudimentary systems.
When it comes to ventilation solutions, you may think of big brands like Be Quiet! or Noctua , but don't let yourself go. AMD is a company with extensive experience and may surprise you.
In general, the stock heatsink that comes as a gift has a fairly respectable performance and according to our needs. It is true that at higher power levels we will need more sophisticated systems, but the same does not happen in the medium and low ranges. You will only need a better component if you plan to do exhaustive tasks like overclocking.
Next we will be listing all the ventilation solutions that the red team currently sells. Almost no model is for sale to the public, so we can only get them by buying an AMD CPU .
Almost silent thermal solutions
We will go from less to more and on the first step we have some heatsinks with a somewhat peculiar name. AMD's near-silent thermal solutions are just that, fairly inexpensive models with acceptable performance.
Heatsinks AMD semi silent 95W
As its name indicates, they are components of different powers whose most notable virtue is that they do not generate excessive sound. These thermal solutions will come alongside AMD 's lower performing processors and are good for office equipment and the like.
We have a 95W power model with a red heatsink and another 125W model with a dark heatsink. Both are inspired by the AMD Wraith Original cooling system, although they lose decorative features such as small LEDs .
AMD semi-silent 125W heatsinks
We can get these heatsinks as long as we buy the CPUs :
AMD near-silent 125W thermal solution | A10-7870K
Athlon ™ 880K |
Near Silent 95W Thermal Solution from AMD | A10-7860K
A8-7670K A8-7650K Athlon X4 870K Athlon ™ X4 860K Athlon ™ X4 845 |
As you will guess, these AMD heatsinks are not particularly powerful or efficient. However, the processors they accompany don't meet these standards either, so do n't worry too much.
AMD Wraith Mid-Range Heatsinks
In this group we want to group three of the AMD heatsinks belonging to the medium and medium-high range. Since they come as a gift along with processors of similar powers, they are probably the refrigeration solutions that most users have.
The heatsinks belonging to this league are the AMD Wraith Stealth, Spire and Spire RGB .
These cooling solutions have superior performance than previous models. They have a good cooling surface and a good air flow.
In the case of the AMD Wraith Stealth , it highlights that its metal part is somewhat lower. This, together with a less aggressive fan, allows the heatsink to generate very little noise. For mid-range teams where they are looking for a pleasant workspace it is a success.
On the other hand, AMD Wraith Spire have a higher performance profile . The metal parts are higher, so the cooling surface increases. Likewise, fans take a more active role, which has different consequences. This makes them much more efficient heatsinks, but also noisier. However, we can change to different working modes to considerably reduce the sound.
Also, you can always change the behavior of the fans using third-party applications like SpeedFan . In this link we leave you an article where we explain how to create a behavior profile according to workload.
Finally, to tell you that the AMD Wraith Spire has a special model with an RGB ring. It does not show information of any kind, but it decorates the interior of the equipment quite well.
The models that these heatsinks will have are:
AMD Wraith Spire (with configurable colored LEDs) | Ryzen ™ 7 2700
Ryzen ™ 7 170 |
AMD Wraith Spire Cooler (without LED) | Ryzen ™ 5 3600X
Ryzen ™ 5 3400G Ryzen 5 2600X Ryzen ™ 5 1600 Ryzen ™ 5 1500X |
AMD Wraith Stealth Cooler (without LED) | Ryzen ™ 5 3600

High-end AMD Wraith heatsinks
As is normal, every complete product line has a high range and AMD heatsinks are no exception. AMD Wraith Max Cooler and AMD Wraith Prism solutions belong to this group, which have a very similar design.
Although on the outside they look the same, the closer we get to the magnifying glass the more the differences begin to stand out. The first thing we see is the superior brightness of the Wraith Prism , which lets RGB lighting through more and better.
On the other hand, according to some tests, the Wraith Max Cooler lags behind in terms of ventilation if we put it to maximum performance. It is true that at lower revolutions (500-2000 rpm) it performs better than the Prism , but having an older design we notice how it falters when it is 100%.
WE RECOMMEND YOU The PlayStation 5 AMD APU processor would be ready for productionAs you can imagine, this group is only reserved for the best processors of the brand. In this regard, only these four CPUs carry an AMD Wraith Prism heatsink:
- Ryzen ™ 7 2700X
Regarding lighting, you can control it using the custom software that AMD offers us. It allows us different lighting modes, as usual, and is compatible with most RGB environments from most brands. You can download it through this link and note that it has been developed by CoolerMaster .
As for the AMD Wraith Max Cooler , we do not have any current model that brings it as standard. Instead, we can buy this cooling solution on Amazon for a price of around € 95.
It is not a bad heatsink, but there are equal or better alternatives for a lower price, although if you want to buy it you can do it through this link.

Although AMD Ryzen Threadripper’s have many options to choose from, one of them is in-house heatsinks. Not for nothing, although they follow the proper name of the other lines, the AMD Wraith Ripper are manufactured by CoolerMaster .
The AMD Wraith Ripper is a thermal solution based on the classic ventilation system and dissipating metal parts. As you can imagine, they are designed for Ryzen Threadrippers , so they are compatible with the TR4 socket, mainly.
Regarding its structure, they have a single fan in the center and two large dissipation towers on their sides. These two pieces are crossed by 7 heatpipes and the entire body is tinted black to increase efficiency (heat by radiation) .
About the decoration, it should be noted that it has a plastic piece covering a large part of the component. This removable chassis contains the RGB of the heatsink and gives it an elegant and attractive touch.
However, the bad news is not cut. The AMD Wraith Ripper costs around € 100 , although if you buy a Ryzen Threadripper you may not care too much. You can buy it on Amazon through the following link.

As you can see, the personal market of the red team is quite prolific and we have many options. We have alternatives for almost all types of processors, although always with the handicap of not being able to buy them.
The important thing is that these models are that they come together with the processor and that they have an adequate performance according to our unit. Some models may fall a bit short, like the Ryzen 5 3600X , but not for too long. And even with those, you can always buy another cooling solution, since the stock sink doesn't add too much cost.
In fact, looking a little in perspective, we can deduce that the situation improves at times. Ryzen 3000 is priced similarly to its second generation, but has better heatsinks and specs. At the end of the day, we are better in all aspects than in times past.
If you are confused about whether to buy a superior cooling system, we advise you to do so only if you have money to spare. Stock AMD heatsinks perform very well and have a solid and reliable construction. Not surprisingly and as is common, competition generates strong competitors and the world of refrigeration systems is wide and wild.
