The video game industry is at one of its best points and we can know it only by the support technologies that are emerging. Without a doubt, DLSS and Ray Tracing have been one of the great expectations of this generation and Nvidia assures that this first will improve significantly in the future.

DLSS

In case you didn't know it, DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) is a technology that came out alongside Nvidia RTX graphics cards. This anti-aliasing filter uses Tensor Cores to rescale images using specialized Artificial Intelligence for support.

It seemed that it would be the great revolution of this generation, since it would allow to play 4K or more with relative ease. However, the final results were quite worse than expected. Some images were blurred, certain objects were not well calculated, or, directly, the image quality was not enough to be worth it.

However, Nvidia knows closely its greatest weaknesses regarding this technology, so it is investigating how to improve it. According to the company's latest statements, they are considering adding more processing technicians to dramatically improve the algorithm. Here you can see the first attempts made in the last Remedy video game , Control :

As you can see, the results are much better than with the native rescaling of the graphics engine, but this has not revealed the whole cake. Nvidia also knows that they still have work to do, since DLSS is still a long way from mimicking native resolutions. Here is another video where they compare native 1080p flames against one recreated by DLSS in the same game :

With this in mind, they are developing new systems, algorithms and techniques that allow them to improve these weaknesses. In fact, Nvidia says they have created a technique that takes advantage of annoying temporary artifacts on screen to improve image sharpness.

The future of generation

Although the improvements over the DLSS that we saw for the first time is very remarkable, we still have a lot of room for improvement. New processing techniques are already under development, but the company believes it is still green and cannot be tested against the public.

An example of this is this video where they present a burning forest made with Unreal Engine 4 . Here they compare DLSS technology against their classic image processing algorithm.

The visual improvement that Artificial Intelligence allows is outstanding, since it is obvious that the algorithm is too aggressive. If you look closely, the algorithm applies blur to the flames and rules out much of the embers that fly out.

With these small improvements that Intelligence has learned, we can achieve a much more attractive and immersive image.

Also, as you may already know, Deep Learning is a continuous learning process. The more data we have, the better the AI will work, so we expect great things from the DLSS in what we have left of generation. In the future we may be able to play at 8K resolution without too much trouble or see highly computer-enhanced frames.

And now tell us: have you tried DLSS in any video game? Do you think we will see a substantial improvement a year from now? Share your ideas in the comment box.
