The Catalan digital canon is annulled by the Constitutional Court

The operators were required to pay the Generalitat 25 cents for each user connected in the autonomous community. This means that the payments amounted to 20 million euros a year. With the proceeds, the Government sought to finance content and cultural projects in Catalan.

Digital Canon Overridden

The canon was approved in 2014. Since then, the central government has constantly requested its annulment. The main argument was that it collided with VAT. Finally, after a long process that has ended in the Constitutional Court, they have obtained the reason. The reason is that they consider that the tax is the same as VAT. Therefore, this should not be the case.

Although not all members of the Constitutional Court have agreed. 7 have voted in favor of removing the canon, but the other 5 members have disagreed. The main reason why they have expressed their discrepancy is that they consider that VAT and the digital fee are not equivalent. So they could both coexist without problems.

With this sentence it seems that this chapter ends, although it is not known if from Catalonia they are going to look for more ways to obtain a similar canon. So we will have to wait for reactions in the coming days on this sentence.
