The nvidia gm200 chip would not arrive until 2016
The current Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 and 970 graphics cards are based on the GM 206 graphics chip which is also known to be the largest of the Little Maxwells, this means that Nvidia still reserves its most powerful chip based on the Maxwell architecture, the GM200 or Big Maxwell that looks like it will come later than expected.
The Nvidia GM200 chip will bring to life the future TITAN 2 / GTX 980Ti graphics cards that will be the most powerful monoGPU cards made by Nvidia. This graphics chip would come under the manufacturing process at 16nm of TSMC whose development is being more expensive than expected and there is high demand from Apple for its new A9 chip, which is why the arrival of the Big Maxwell would not take place until 2016.
The new AMD Radeon R300 series will arrive in 2015 under a 20nm TSMC manufacturing process, so Nvidia should compete against them with its current cards manufactured with the 28nm process, so it would be at a clear disadvantage regarding the manufacturing process. For this reason, they could consider a redesign of the GM200 chip to be able to launch it under a 20nm process to compete with AMD.
Finally, the current GM206 chips will also be manufactured at 16nm in 2015, improving their energy efficiency and would be the first 16nm chips from Nvidia.
