Mark Pepermaster, chief technology officer for AMD, has confirmed that the Zen 2 design is now complete. Recall that this is the microarchitecture that will give life to the third generation of Ryzen processors that will hit the market next year 2019.

AMD confirms that Zen 2 is finished

AMD is about to launch the new Zenzen-based second-generation Ryzen processors on the market, a slight upgrade from current Ryzen thanks to a much more mature 12nm manufacturing process. It will be in 2019 when the third generation Ryzen based on the Zen 2 architecture arrive under a manufacturing process at 7 nm.

X86 processors are much more complex than ARM-based processors so it is not yet possible to manufacture them at 7nm with a good success rate, before this can happen Global Foundries and TSMC have to debug their processes a lot at 7nm. That is why it will not be until 2019 when we see the new AMD Zen 2 microarchitecture on the market.

AMD to manufacture its 7nm processors with TSMC and Global Foundries

The Zen 2 design is complete and improves the original Zen core in many aspects, for now there are no more details, it is too early to talk about a chip that comes in 2019 so it will take a little longer to know the specific improvements that has applied AMD, possibly in the middle of the year it will start talking about it.

Fourth generation Ryzen processors will arrive after 2019, possibly in 2020 and perhaps based on the Zen 3 architecture but with the same manufacturing process at 7 nm, in this case the transition to the new architecture should be easier by maintaining the node manufacturing.
