Since the beginning of last November, the iPhone X has been available to users; It is the new star phone from Apple, a device that stands out not only for its renewed design, but also, and especially, for incorporating a three-dimensional facial recognition function that the company has called Face ID, and which is the end of the already classic Touch ID . However, as expected, the competition's proposal to this feature has soon emerged.

Face ID vs. Face Unlock

Below you can see a video made by the guys on the MacRumors website detailing the first impressions of this new feature. Specifically, a comparison is established between Face ID and Touch ID, however, what is even more interesting is the comparison between Apple's Face ID and other similar facial recognition functions such as the OnePlus 5T.

According to previous experience, in most cases the Face ID of the iPhone X works correctly and is at least as fast as the Touch ID, however, it is still noticeable that it is a technology that must evolve. For example, when iPhone X is held horizontally, such as when you're already in bed at night, Face ID often doesn't work. It can also fail in situations where the user wears sunglasses, a hat or a bougainvillea that covers part of the face.

On the contrary, these flaws that have been observed in Apple's new iPhone X have not been detected in some of the other smartphones that also already use facial recognition techniques. This is the case of the OnePlus 5T, and Samsung's devices with facial recognition, which use multiple biometric facial recognition systems combined with a fingerprint sensor. But beware, because this does not simply mean that one is better than another, there are nuances.

The Face ID feature would be superior in quality to the competition for a simple reason: Face ID offers greater security. This is due to the fact that the option proposed by those of Cupertino uses a 3D depth detection system making use of the combination of an infrared camera and a spot projector. Conversely, companies like OnePlus and Samsung are employing 2D recognition methods that rely exclusively on the device's front camera.

If we remove 3D depth detection, the OnePlus 5T's Face Unlock feature may be faster than Apple's Face ID feature however, it doesn't work in low light, unlike Face ID, which can work in virtually all lighting conditions. On the other hand, we must not lose sight of the fact that the “facial unlock” of the OnePlus 5T is not so much a security function as it is not used to verify passwords or validate mobile payments.

The popular and well-known KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, has recently stated that Face ID represents an advance of at least two years to the other similar facial recognition techniques that the rest of the smartphone manufacturers with Android operating system can offer. This point is evident in the division of functionalities that a similar system is capable of offering between the OnePlus 5T and the iPhone X.

Therefore, Face ID could be considered an important starting point, not a goal, but rather a new system that many users will still have to get used to as it involves the loss of certain comforts that Touch ID does offer, such as the possibility of unlocking the iPhone regardless of its position.
