The UK government has started to accept Apple Pay and Google Pay for payment of certain services through its gov.uk website. This is an interesting change in the payment policy that is expected to be extended to other services as well as to local governments and other institutions throughout the year.
Apple Pay and Google Pay "will increase comfort and security"
UK citizens with compatible devices can now use Apple Pay and Google Pay to pay fees related to the country's Global Entry Service, basic online disclosure and restriction controls (DBS), Registered Traveler Service and the Electronic Visa Exemption Service (EVW).
Over the same year, further integration with local governments, the police and the National Health Service systems is expected.
"Allowing people to pay for government services through Apple Pay and Google Pay means they won't have to enter their credit or debit card information when making payments, " said Till Wirth, product manager at gov.uk Pay. "This innovation will increase the comfort and safety of gov.uk. Pay users, and hopefully it will make your online experience that much easier. ”
Launched in 2016, the gov.uk online payment system has so far supported credit and debit cards, and has logged more than 2.9 million transactions.
British Minister Oliver Dowden points out that the integration of mobile payments improves the security of transactions. Apple Pay, for example, is protected by fingerprint or facial recognition, backed by an access code on the device.
In addition, this new option offers an optimized user experience, as users can speed up transactions without completing the credit or debit card authorization fields.
