The i9

A leak has just revealed that the upcoming Intel Core i9-9900K processors, and probably others of the same generation as the i7-9700k, will be welded.

Big news: at least the i9-9900K will be welded (and maybe the i7-9700K and i5-9600K too)

The anonymous leak that has arrived at Videocardz has slides detailing the next ninth-generation Intel processors, but one detail in the mentioned technologies stands out: STIM.

The incorporation of STIM or Soldered Thermal Interface Material clearly indicates that the heat transfer between the die and the IHS will be carried out by welding, and without making use of the already known low-quality thermal paste that they used until now ( popularly called 'toothpaste' ) and that caused major performance improvements by performing the dangerous delid process.

If this STIM feature is mentioned it means that it will be present at least in the top-of-the-range processor, the i9-9900K, but that does not mean that it cannot be present in the i7-9700K or i5-9600K, and we will have to wait to confirm it. In any case, this is a real news since it is most likely that these processors can be cooled properly and that those related to the thermal compound used by Intel in the past will no longer be found.

It's also great news for the overclocking community, who won't have to worry about delidding processors to improve their temperatures, without risking permanent damage.

Clarification for beginning users about the type of joint we are going to talk about:

Soldering / bonding with thermal paste is done between so-called IHS and die, two parts of CPU, not between CPU and heatsink

The new 9th generation Intel processors are getting closer! For now, we are seeing how two of the most criticized aspects in past generations are being taken seriously by Intel. On the one hand, there is the compatibility with Z370, H370, B360, H310 and Q370 boards, something that did not happen with the move to Coffee Lake. On the other, there is the use of this solder that will be really beneficial for everyone.
