iOS 11.4.1 introduces one of those new features that arrive without making much noise, but which are quite important. This is the USB Restriction Mode feature, which is designed to keep hackers at bay, but unfortunately it comes with a major bug.

USB Restriction Mode has a major vulnerability

USB Restriction Mode was designed in response to hackers like Grayshift who develop tools and methods to break into iOS devices. Those tools end up in the hands of legislators, but also in the hands of criminals, jeopardizing the safety of users.

Its operation means that when an hour has passed without the iPhone or iPad being unlocked with a password, the Lightning-USB connection disables any data transfer. Apple did not include this news in the release notes, probably not to alert interested parties. The user can find the USB Restricted mode in the Touch ID and password section of the setup application as “USB Accessories”. The feature is enabled, so you'll have to unlock the device using a password or Touch ID before the USB data connection can work again.

ElcomSoft security researchers report that USB restricted mode appears to have an error that resets the one-hour countdown when a USB accessory is connected. Not all accessories work, but for their tests they used the $ 39 Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter dongle.

While iOS 11.4.1 is probably the final update before iOS 12, this security bug could force Apple to quickly roll out 11.4.2 to fix it.
