A few days ago we presented to you from Computex 2019 Elgato Stream Deck XL, the evolution in XL version of the video mixer most desired by streamers, which we also analyzed in its day here. This XL version now comes with up to 32 programmable buttons from the Stream Deck app, each with its customizable LCD screen and countless options compatible with all content editing and social media programs.

And we start as always with the Elgato Stream Deck XL Unboxing, which in this case has changed its presentation substantially. Now we are facing a very Premium rigid cardboard box and in the purest Smartphone style. In it, a beautiful color is presented that surrounds the entire box in blue tones with a large photo of the Deck as the cover.

Right behind in this same box, we have more photos to develop a fairly large amount of information about the device. The opening will be done by pulling the main cover upwards, like Smartphone boxes.

Inside we are going to find not too many things, so it is a rather brief bundle:

And nothing else, so we processed to investigate more about the design of this device.

Exterior design

Elgato Stream Deck XL may seem like a simple table with a few buttons spread out, but we'll see how it is much more than this. Although for now let's focus on design, the truth is that the Elgato Stream Deck Mini that we already analyzed in Professional Review is kept in a fairly continuous style.

And it seems that they heard our comments in the previous review, because this new device has changed just what we asked for. Now instead of plastic, we have an integral finish in matt black aluminum, significantly increasing the quality and providing a finish typical of a Premium product.

In addition, the manufacturer has chosen to implement a USB Type-C port to connect the device to our PC, and in this case it is a cable that we can perfectly remove to transport and store the device in a better way. Good update job without a doubt.

Precisely there we have the USB Type-C port in its version 3.1 Gen1. This port alone will be sufficient to send the necessary power to the button box, illuminate all LCD displays, and receive and send the relevant information.

And the truth is that the port is quite attached to the wall of the device, so be careful when connecting and disconnecting it. The reason for this location is simple to have a way to route the cable underneath the device when we put it on the table without its second bracket. Since we can see that it has four rubber feet at the ends and a hole in the center to get the cable out there.

If we prefer to install it vertically on our desk to have access to the functions in a visible and direct way without taking our eyes off the camera too much, all we have to do is place the lower bracket on Elgato Stream Deck XL. Remember that the previous version had it installed permanently, so it is another great step forward in ergonomics.

This bracket is made of hard plastic and has a total of four internal magnets in the supports to stick to the button panel. In addition, in the back they have a small hole to pass the USB cable and thus route it perfectly.

Possibilities of Elgato Stream Deck XL

If you do not have much idea of the world of streamers, you will think that it is simply a device to create shortcuts on PC, but the truth is that it is much more. Elgato Stream Deck XL is entirely aimed at content creators, that's true, since the great power of this device is to be able to adapt dynamically to what we are doing in our team.

With these 32 keys, we will have a lot of options to explore, and it is also compatible with editing programs such as Elg ato Game Capture, OBS, Streamlabs, Mixer, After Effects, Adobe Premier, etc. But also with social networks and streaming platforms such as Twitch, YouTube, Twitter or Facebook. And since we have buttons to spare, we can configure shortcuts on our PC, macros or the complete multimedia control.

But surely the most interesting thing for the content creator user is the possibility of creating an indeterminate number of profiles with functions. On a PC we use many programs, at least to create content we have a social network, an editing program and capture programs. This Elgato Stream Deck XL can store profiles with the functions of each program and that the device automatically changes profiles depending on the program we are using.

Installation and software

To install this Elgato Stream Deck XL all we have to do is connect the USB cable between the device and a USB 3.1 Gen1 (3.0) port on our computer so that it is automatically detected.

Then we will have to go to the Elgato page and download the application to personalize and control the device. This app is called Stream Deck, so there is no loss.

Applications like Nvidia ShadowPlay for capturing games could be a good complement to this Stream Deck XL, which thanks to its own software can be integrated without problems. Although if we are more of OBS or Xplit, well we will not have any impediment.

In fact, the program itself offers us an incredible amount of pre-defined actions from the main platforms and programs used by streamers. The operation is simple, we take the function we want and drag it to the button table so that it is automatically assigned to the button we choose.

If what we need is to create a shortcut that triggers several functions simultaneously or consecutively, we will only drag the “ several functions ” option to access a panel where we can place all the ones we want. Basically it is creating a macro within another macro, and thus doing tasks with a single touch of the button.

And if what we want is to use the options of a program, then we will not go to the " System " section and drag the " Shortcut " or " Hotkey " option so that, in it, we can create a keyboard shortcut with one or various keys. For example, we have created a button to select the Photoshop drag tool.

And it is not all, because we can customize each LCD screen with an icon or image that we have to identify the function or even with a GIF, to make the typical animations in live broadcasts. The size it supports is 72 x 72 pixels, but we can place any image that the program will adapt to it in size.

If we go to the program options we can configure the brightness of the buttons, update the firmware, and most importantly, create and edit all the profiles that we want to do.

Without a doubt, Elgato Stream Deck XL and the Stream Deck application are two extremely simple elements to use at first glance, but with incredible power in expert hands and with time to create everything we can think of. Precisely for this reason, it is a device aimed at a very specific group of users, since for "normal" use it is completely out of place.

Final words and conclusion about Elgato Stream Deck XL

Corsair certainly remains on the cutting edge of innovative options like the Elgato Stream Deck XL, the perfect game room for content creators and streamers. Investing in such a device is a long-term insurance to work and to improve interaction with subscribers.

Something positive about this model are the interesting updates in terms of design. We asked for a USB cable that could be disconnected, that's how it was, higher quality of construction, since it is now aluminum. And it also offers a removable support to place it as we want. Good job.

The configuration possibilities of its 32 buttons with color LCD screen are practically limitless. Design programs, recording programs, social networks, streaming platforms, keyboard shortcuts, multimedia access to microphones, speakers, animations, etc. Virtually any macro that we can create on a PC, it will also be possible to do it here and also for multiple actions.

And how much does Elgato Stream Deck XL cost ? Well, we will have it available for an approximate price of about 250 euros. Remember that the 15-key version is worth around 150 euros and the mini version around 100 euros. So it's not bad, with the new features it supports and the improved capacity, it's a perfect complete to invest in for our work.
