Energy Sistem is preparing for the summer by launching its Energy Outdoor Box family of wireless speakers. An off-road design

The Outdoor Box family of speakers has a robust rectangular shape. The rigid plastic construction of its outer cover gives it great resistance against shocks and falls. The central zone has a mesh on both sides to allow the sound to be output on one side and the lower frequencies on the opposite side. This micro-perforated mesh is designed so that it does not allow water splashes to penetrate. This feature together with the shock resistance discussed above give us an off-road speaker designed to be taken almost anywhere.

The Energy Outdoor Box also have small dimensions of 173 x 71 x 50 mm and a weight of 379 grams, ideal for portability . Thanks to the built-in carabiner we were able to carry it hanging for an entire afternoon while we were walking and we hardly noticed the extra weight of the device.

Detail design

We go into detail the physical buttons that we find on the top of the speaker. These are embedded in the case rather than protruding, with the idea of not damaging them if they take a hit. From left to right we find the following buttons and indicators:

Microphone for calls. Power on and off. Bluetooth search and function switch. Decrease volume and rewind. Play, pause and control calls. Increase volume and forward. Toggle between flashlight modes. Function and charge indicator.

On the left side there is a compartment protected by a plastic cover to prevent water from entering. Its interior houses the 3.5mm audio jack connector, the microSD memory card slot and a 5V type B microUSB charging port.

On the right side is the interesting addition of a 300 lumen flashlight. This has several lighting modes: the first mode is steady light. The second, being in saving mode, projects an attenuated fixed light. Finally, the third mode emits light intermittently. In case of being in an emergency situation, it is possible to hold the flashlight button for a few seconds so that it performs an SOS in morse code by flashing the light.

Finally, at the bottom there are two non-slip plastic extrusions that help to keep the speaker firm if it rests on any surface.

Small but powerful speakers

We come to the most important section of any speaker. In this specific case, Energy Sistem mounts two dynamic full-range speakers with 5 watts of power each. This gives us a total power of 10 watts on the front of the device. With this power you get a fairly loud and powerful sound. Perfect for enjoying music outdoors.

On the other hand , the playback quality is quite good overall. However, it does have some points for improvement. Although the sound does not have any noticeable distortion, it does not end up sounding 100% clear either. It is an aspect that is barely appreciated but is there.

The rear is relegated to the passive radiator, which is responsible for reinforcing the lower frequencies. Although it does a commendable job, this frequency range is the weakest in the speaker. Being the high frequencies the predominant ones. In some types of music the lack of bass may not be appreciated, but in other styles it is probably more noticeable.

Full-day battery

The Energy Outdoor Box speakers have a total battery of 2000 mAh. As always happens in this type of device, autonomy will largely depend on the volume level that we select. On paper, with a volume of 50%, its autonomy can be up to 16 hours. On the contrary, with a volume of 100%, the autonomy drops to 7 hours.

In our particular case , with a volume level close to 100%, the battery lasted us around 13 or 14 hours. A lot of hours when compared to its theoretical duration. Obviously, more factors influence the battery life, such as the type of music played. The more you use the bass, the more autonomy will decrease.

Charging time is a less surprising aspect. When the speaker's battery is low, around 10%, an alert will sound. The full charge of the speaker took us about 3 hours and 10 minutes.

Connectivity

If we use the microSD card to play music, we will have a button to move between different folders. Something that is appreciated.

Regarding Bluetooth, we find version 4.1 of class II with the usual range of up to 10 meters.

Another very welcome addition is FM Radio. Its tuning and its use is really simple and it works efficiently. It is possible to improve the signal by connecting the miniJACK audio cable. Tuned stations will be saved for the next occasion, however it will always be better to retune if the speaker is moved.

Energy Sistem has managed to launch two products on the market that will delight many people in these months of good weather. Going anywhere and enjoying music without worrying about the safety or placement of our speaker is wonderful. This is what the company must have thought when they designed a speaker resistant to shocks, splashes and with a good sound level. Those are its biggest advantages. To this we must add the great connectivity they have, the house brand.

The disadvantages, fortunately, do not outweigh the virtues. You need a more crystalline sound and a stronger bass. But they are details that can be understood by having to stuff the components in such a small space.
