In this new step by step we will see how we can scan documents in Windows 10 from our multifunction printer or scanner without the need to install the typical applications and drivers from the manufacturers' pages. This is especially useful if we have old printing equipment and cannot find its original drivers or applications to scan documents.

You must agree with us that the camera of a mobile phone or another, will be able to compete against a scanner when it comes to digitizing documents. Despite the fact that they are devices that have been between us for a long time, it does this function better than any other camera that comes before us. The colors, the exposure, and the color levels make the document come out almost the same as we see it in reality.

The only drawback that these devices have is the programmed obsolescence that manufacturers put on it. Although this usually affects more print mode than scanner mode.

Let's stop talking and let's get down to business. How to scan in Windows 10 without applications.

Connect the device

Obviously the first thing we will have to do is connect the printing device to our equipment. It is also possible that this scanner or printing has Wi-Fi and can be contacted through the network.

In any case, we must establish a connection with the device in question. Having Windows 10 we will have no problem with practically any device, since the system will automatically install its drivers.

Next, turn on the device if you see that the system has not detected anything. To be more sure, we can go to the device manager to see that it is correctly detected. For it:

  • We right click on the start button and a list of options will open. We must choose the option " Device Manager "

  • Now it will look like a window with a list of connections and devices. We must search for " Printers ". In this section the name of our device should be available. If it is a multifunction printer, if it is only a scanner we can locate it a little higher on the list. In " Imaging Devices "

Almost certainly your device will be installed correctly. Otherwise, it is possible that you should look for the drivers on the manufacturer's page or on some website, but this will be in 1% of cases.

Scan in Windows 10

Once the paraphernalia of the scanner installation is finished, we are already in a position to scan our butt, or optionally, some other document or image.

  • We are going to open the start and we are going to write " scanner ". Among the results that will be shown to us we are going to choose “ Windows Fax and Scanner

We will open an application that is the one that is installed by default to scan and send by fax. If you look in the lower right corner there are two tabs " Fax " and " Digitization ". We will place ourselves in the latter.

  • To carry out a scan we go to the top button of " New digitization " and click on it.

Immediately a window will appear in which what we want to scan appears. We can configure:

  • Profile: if it is a photo or a document Color scale File output type: BMP, JPEG, PNG and TIF. Resolution, brightness and contrast.

Nothing to envy to the applications of the manufacturers.

  • To start scanning, click on the “ Digitize ” button and the process will begin. Once finished, we will return to the main screen with the final result. To save the file, we click on the “ Save as… ” button.

A disadvantage that we have with this application is that the documents cannot be saved in PDF. Nor can we select a certain area to save.

We are going to see a small free application from the Microsoft Store that is capable of doing these functions.

Scan in Windows 10 with APP Scanner

To download this application we go to Microsoft Store from the start menu. For this we write " store " and it should go out.

  • Inside the store search engine we write " scanner " and we will choose the application " Windows Scanner " which is free.

  • Once installed we will have it available in the start menu by writing " Scanner "

In this application we will be able to store documents as PDF in addition to the options that we had in the previous application.

  • To scan and edit the photo click on the bottom button of " Preview " In this way we can select the area we want to digitize and store

  • When we have it selected then we can give it to “ Digitize ” and that part will be stored.

Scanning in Windows 10 is very simple and fast. Through this Scanner application we can even select the piece that we want to photo.
