Facebook has spent years collecting call logs and SMS data from Android devices. Several Twitter users have reported that they have found months or years of call history data in their downloadable Facebook data file. Users of the social network have been scared by the recent Cambridge Analytica privacy scandal, which has led them to download all the data that Facebook stores in their account. The results have been alarming for some.

Facebook collects personal data from Android users

"Oh wow my deleted Facebook zip file contains information about every phone call and text I made for a year, " says Twitter user Mat Johnson. Another, Dylan McKay, says "somehow he has my entire call history with my partner's mother." Others have found a similar pattern in which close contacts, such as family members, are the only ones to appear in Facebook's call logs.

Ars Technica reports that Facebook has been requesting access to contacts, SMS data, and call history on Android devices to improve its friend recommendation algorithm and distinguish between business contacts and true personal friendships. Zukerberg's company appears to be collecting this data through its Messenger app, which often prompts Android users to take over as the default SMS client.

The same call log and SMS data collection has not yet been discovered on iOS devices. Although Apple allows some specialized applications to access this data on a limited basis.
