What is fast boot?
It is an option whose purpose is to start Windows much faster. This is found in the BIOS of our motherboard and in Windows. The first time we saw this option was with the arrival of Windows 8 For you to understand it better, we are going to differentiate the operation with fast boot and without it.
- Without fast boot. Windows closes all open applications, then closes the session and shuts down the system (or goes into sleep mode). When we turn on, Windows has to load everything again. With fast boot. It can be said that when closing Windows, it saves the state of the session that the PC was in before shutting it down in a file and then turns off the system. When we turn on the PC, Windows does not load everything, but shows the state of the system before turning it off. In this way, it starts faster.
Some of you may say : If I do the same by suspending the PC! It is not the same, here we are talking about turning off the PC completely.
All are advantages, right?
It is not entirely true. In the vast majority of cases, yes, we save time and energy. On the other hand, there are situations in which we cannot have it activated to perform certain tasks. Sometimes certain programs need us to turn off the PC completely. Why? For the changes to take effect.
It also occurs when we update the BIOS from firmware version, a task that requires a final complete shutdown. Therefore, they are not all advantages, but can be a major obstacle to carrying out certain tasks.
How can I activate it?
There are two main methods to activate it, which we will explain below. However, we recommend doing both to fully enable this option. So, follow both tutorials.
In some BIOS you can find the option " Ultra-fast ", but be careful because, perhaps, your graphics card does not support this mode. That said, it does not seem like a highly recommended option, since in practice it is more marketing than anything else.
From Windows
It is very easy to perform these steps.
- We open the Start Menu and write "Control Panel " to access it.
- We go to " Power Options ". In the left column, we click on " Choose the behavior of the start / stop buttons ". We give the option " Change the currently unavailable configuration ".
- In Windows it would already be activated.

This option may not appear in your BIOS, not even in the most advanced settings. In my personal case, I can't find the option anywhere. So, don't worry because it is not an indispensable function. It depends a lot on the motherboard we have.
On the other hand, those who want to do it, can do it in the following way:
- You start the PC and press the key that your motherboard tells you to access its BIOS. You access the "advanced" or "boot" menus , which are the most frequent. You activate it and click on " exit " or " save ", save changes and restart. It usually says something like " Save changes and reboot ".
We will have finished activating the fast boot. As you can see, it is not complicated at all and anyone can do it.
If you ask me for my opinion or personal recommendation, I would tell you not to activate it to save yourself from "silly" problems, such as those resulting from having to completely turn off the system for a program to take effect, for example.
