Over the last few years we have seen the arrival in Linux of quite a few important games, the latest addition to the Tux operating system catalog, is Rise of the Tomb Raider, led by Feral Interactive and the Vulkan API.

Rise of the Tomb Raider comes to Linux

Feral Interactive has once again been commissioned to do the Linux conversion of a game that came out for Windows more than two years ago with the DirectX 11 API, although it later received a patch for DirectX 12. The Linux version of Rise of the Tomb Raider has been developed with Vulkan, so it will be very interesting to see a performance comparison between both versions.

We recommend reading our post on GameMode is a tool from Feral Interactive to improve the performance of games on Linux

Vulkan is a much more modern API than DX 11, and is able to take more advantage of current hardware, so the Linux version could have an important advantage in this regard, the pity that the Nvidia and AMD drivers are less advanced than Windows, something that can mask the end result.

The minimum requirements to run Rise of the Tomb Raider on Linux are as follows:

  • Operating system: Ubuntu 17.10 Processor: Intel Core i3-4130T or equivalent AMD Memory: 8 GB RAM Graphics: 2 GB AMD R9 285 (3rd generation GCN and above), 2 GB Nvidia GTX 680 or higher Storage: 28 GB available space

Additional notes:

  • * Requires Vulkan * Nvidia graphics cards require driver version 396.18 or later. If you need to update your drivers, we recommend using the proprietary GPU driver PPA. * AMD graphics cards require Mesa 17.3.5 or later. If you need to update your drivers, we recommend using the Padoka Stable PPA. * Vega graphics cards require Mesa 18.0 or later. * AMD GCN 1st and 2nd generation graphics cards are not supported. * Intel graphics cards are not supported. * Requires a SSE2 capable processor.

Excellent news for all Linux users.
