The battery of games for Switch that Nintendo promised us is coming, and Fire Emblem Warriors was one of the most anticipated titles this fall. The Warriors franchise reappears on Nintendo after Hyrule Warriors, which adapted The Legend of Zelda franchise on Wii U and 3DS. Now it is the characters of Fire Emblem who come to ally and fight.

We show you our experience with Fire Emblem Warriors for Nintendo Switch, let's go there!

Fire Emblem Warriors

For those who do not know the franchise, Fire Emblem is about medieval epic stories where magic and parallel universes are present to complicate our characters' lives. Family conflicts, past wars that tarnish the present and brittle loyalties are the lines through which games based on their story mode are structured.

History: How do you say your name was?

In Fire Emblem Warriors we find many of the main characters of all the games in the Fire Emblem franchise. In order to enjoy all of them, history places us at a time when the different universes and temporal moments have converged and these characters and various antagonists have met. We must defeat the Dragon of Chaos so that our characters can return to their worlds, and we will do so by obtaining the astrogems for the Flame Shield.

Between battles and during combat we learn about the development of the story, as well as the characters that have appeared. Since they do not know each other, on many occasions we will fight them and then we will ally ourselves to be able to handle them.

This decision made with the characters is very pleasing to the fans of the series, who can fight with each other as they have not been able to before. However, the constant introduction of characters without much relationship between worlds makes the plot of the relationships between them more superficial than in other titles in the saga.

Gameplay: Strategy and combat combos

Watching a few seconds of gameplay or playing a single mission we can be left with the impression that this hack and slash combat game is won by hitting buttons without learning anything. With the difficulty at medium level and difficult at once we see that the game requires a lot more from us.

In hack and slash combat we use different weapons such as swords, axes, pikes, bows and tomes of magic to fight our way through hordes of enemies. Button combinations and special attacks will allow us to do real strong damage, but not only do we manage to defeat enemies as fast as we need. Depending on the weapons and the type of war unit that we carry, we will be more or less effective against the private soldiers and, above all, the leaders that we meet. Without understanding this well and changing characters according to the enemy, we did not achieve victory in time.

Crucial is also the strategy, where we get to repeat a mission up to four times because we are not looking at what paths we must take to reach the destination on time. The missions try to make us understand the map, the challenge before us and order the other characters to position themselves to help us overcome it.

The gaming experience is really entertaining and poses constant challenges, it has surprised us!

Graphics: can we continue to undervalue the Switch?

Of course, whenever we talk about graphics we prefer to have the best and most realistic experience. But Nintendo has been saying its own for years in games like Zelda BotW and Mario Odissey. An experience with less details, textures and polygons but with very distinctive and aesthetic touches can give more to the target.

Fire Emblem Warriors, published by Nintendo, also takes communion from the design of the house. Cinematic scenes and when we activate special attacks is when the detail shines especially. Meanwhile, during the battle, the main characters and enemies are seen in detail, to the detriment of the rank and file soldiers and the stage, which is empty of extra elements. For us this option prioritizes the resources of the Switch in the most important thing, although of course the more the better.

We also have two graphic modes available that we can choose from. In one of them we try to maintain 30 fps and increase the detail, and in the other we try to run at 60 fps with less detail in the scene. We always like these options, especially if one thing or another makes a vein throb.

Of course, playing in TV mode we will enjoy the game to the fullest, but in portable mode we do not regret anything !

Constant messages if we activate the help

As the challenges go, as soon as we started we put the difficulty to the limit. But since we imagined that the game did not try to die repeatedly, we activated the help to explain the different mechanics to us.

And we strive to learn, because the help messages are so annoying that the experience is unplayable. When the battle gets rough, they overlap with the level-up information and it comes to a stop every 10 seconds.

So, just learn to play it, you have to go to disable it in the settings!

Final words and conclusion

Watching the videos and after a first mission we were not convinced that the game would convince us. Japanese aesthetics don't connect much with us either, so we thought we wouldn't connect too much.

However, when understanding how to play and what he asks of us, we always want to do one more game of strategy and the good stuff. Its price in online store is 49.90 euros for the Nintendo Switch version, while the Nintendo 3DS version is 36.90 euros. Of course, a fair price for a great game.
