We already have the first images of a motherboard with the AM4 socket and the A320 chipset intended for mid-range and entry-level equipment. It is an OEM plate from the manufacturer HP and therefore it is not a model that we can buy in stores.

Features of the first AM4 A320 motherboard

The HP "Willow" is a new motherboard designed by HP for the new AMD Bristol Ridge processors that make use of the AM4 socket that will also be compatible with the Summit Ridge that will arrive in early 2017 with the promising Zen microarchitecture. This new board will give life to teams that are very likely to be below 500 euros to offer an excellent balance between price and performance.

The socket image shows us that the new processors for AM4 will have much thinner pins, something logical if we consider that their number has increased greatly to exceed 1300 when AM3 + did not reach 1000 pins. We continue with a square heatsink retention mechanism and similar to current Intel systems, this has the advantage that it allows the heatsink to be oriented in any direction to install it as it is most convenient.

The processors for AM4 have a SoC design so the chipset is relegated to the background and its mission is simply to expand the I / O capabilities offered by the processor itself, we could even see cheaper boards that decide to do without the chipset entirely. In this case we have a fairly simple A320 chipset and with a power consumption of just 5W that can be cooled without the need for a heatsink. We ended up with the presence of two DDR4 DIMM slots, one PCIe gen 3.0 x16 bus, one M.2 port, and two SATA III 6GB / s ports.
