Microsoft Studios returns to the fray with Gears 5 for Xbox One and PC. A saga that needs no introduction, and that in its day changed hands to The Coalition to continue offering more and better as is this case. We continue the Gears of War saga now renamed Geas 5, and that comes with quite a few new features in the playable section such as mechanics and scenarios, although the protagonists remain the same.
What brings us this new Gears 5 and what is different? Well, we will see all this and more in our analysis, so let's go there!
Synopsis: the war against the hive continues
This new Gears 5 is directly a sequel to Gears of War 4, continuing the story of our three protagonists JD and his father Marcus, Del and especially Kait, where this will take special prominence due to what happened in the previous title.
We then start from Gears of War 4, where JD manages to free his father Marcus from the Hive. The new recruit Kait, with descendants of the Locus also wished to save her mother, kidnapped when she was young by the hive and being turned into her new queen. This issue in the end does not go too well, and that is how we got to this Gears 5.
Now our three protagonists along with a Marcus in the beginning, will try again to reactivate the Hammer of Dawn in one more attempt to destroy the Hive. But of course, along the way they will suffer many complications, especially with Kait's past, or rather, with its origins. Finally, many of the hive's secrets will be revealed to us, but it is your task to discover what happens in the end with it and our Gears, because something JD has done that Kati and Del have not done well at all.
Technical section and test bench
As we already know, Microsoft Studios, through its franchise The Coalition, took the reins of this saga two years ago with its 4th installment. One that undoubtedly maintained the essence of the three previous titles but that was not exactly a revolution, but rather was a way of laying the foundations in making contact with its new creator, since Epic games had left the bar quite high.
Now it is very different, since the team led by Rod Fergusson, has the experience and the journey to give this Gears 5 a good twist. The graphics engine is still Epic's Unreal Engine 4, but with the textures in UHD 4K and impressive scenarios that will bring out the best in this engine.
Gameplay: more and better
Despite the saga taking a different name, The Coalition has kept the entire essence of Gears Of War 4 and of course has improved it in practically all aspects, and one of them has been gameplay.
The campaign mode is presented with a structure divided into different acts, this has not changed. In each act we will have different scenarios, all of them with their final and intermediate bosses, and we must say that in greater quantity. In the same way, the game dynamics is based on going from an initial point to an end point, meanwhile, the characters will develop the story through cinematics and conversations in real time.
So what has changed? Well now an exploration component is added in the scenarios, especially in the intermediate acts. In fact, the company claims that one of the maps is 50 times larger than any made so far in Gears of War. This makes the gameplay structure a bit more like what God of War 4 offered us, with the ability to find heirloom weapons, documents, open new dialogs, or have more side quests. For this, in Act II we will be given a new means of transport called Skiff, which is basically a mixture between sled and windsurfing wing to quickly cover long distances.
The control system is still in the third person and the basic and combat mechanics are the same as the previous Gears, you will discover that many more individual or combined movements can be made with the companions. There will also be breakable elements on stage to help kill enemies.
There are more details that are new, such as the addition of health bars to enemies, something that until now did not exist. The lancer, the legendary COG weapon, will now have missiles as a secondary fire, and heirloom weapons will have unique functionalities.
Most important game modes and news
If something has Gears 5 is variety in terms of game modes, let's see what they are:
Campaign mode:
The basic, and the reason why we bought the game, right? The campaign mode can be done alone, or with one or two friends on a split screen. Each player will be in the context of their character, which means that Kait's “paranoia” will only be seen by the one who controls Kait.
What's more, we can choose the character Jack, the robot that in previous games was almost useless. Now he is one more companion, and we can even control him alone so he can do different actions such as picking up weapons or covering up.
Horde mode
The horde mode is another one that has changed the most along with the campaign. The basic system is the same, a series of players face hordes of successive enemies up to 50. This time there will be 5 players, who will necessarily have to have characters with different class abilities, to complete the horde successfully, we are talking about tanks, scouts, attack and of course the manufacturer, the only one capable of improving defenses.
We must collect the power tokens that the enemies leave to level up or take them to the manufacturer. And also cards that will help us increase the character's abilities. As always, at first we should take it easy, learning the mechanics, and above all to cooperate, because otherwise we will be dead.
Escape mode
This is another of the great novelties in cooperative mode. In this one, we will be members of a squad of Gears that gets inside a hive to eliminate it. The problem here is that we have a limited time, and the ammunition is conspicuous by its absence, just how little the enemies leave us. One more challenge against the clock, let's say, is a simplified horde mode.
Quick arcade and qualifying game
It is basically the same as a classic game against each other, but aimed at less experienced players and where less tactical skills and dexterity are required. This is ideal to go tanning as players, since in the traditional versus we will be struck by those with more experience.
In qualifying it is about facing rivals with a level similar to ours to relatively easily earn rewards with which to improve the player.
We have endless modes to choose from and variants on this Gears 5, so the hours of entertainment will be tons if we really like it. We can even create hives and share them to play in escape mode.
Story, characters
The history of Gears 5 has improved significantly compared to previous titles, at least in terms of the depth of the characters and what it tells us. Although it is true that the campaign can be fulminated in about 15 hours if we only focus on the main story.
Kait is the one who takes the reins this time, although the rest of the characters will also make themselves known in a deeper way, especially in their relationships with peers. Let's say that it is a better told story and not a simple exclusion to make a shooter with a dose of fan service at the end of the game as it happens on many occasions.
Soundtrack and dubbing into Spanish
The soundtrack is as always an important aspect in a game, although not so much in one of this type. It is good, but it will always remain in a secondary plane as far as music is concerned, at least that has been my perception, not being at the level of the Epic titles. As for sound effects, here there is nothing to object to, and if we have a quality according to the set.
The dubbing into Spanish is very well carried out and with an excellent level of interpretation by the Spanish actors, which is in the language in which we have played. In this way it is a pleasure to play, with voices that are already known from the previous title and that blend perfectly with the context of the action. A delight without a doubt, something that not many games can say, without going any further Control, one of the worst dubbing has in 2019.
A much broader mapping where to look
As we have said, the main campaign can be completed in less than 20 hours, but the content is much more extensive than in any Gears of War created to date. This is because the mappings are much more extensive, especially in the central Acts, since for example Act I and IV are more in the traditional Gears style for script reasons.
This makes it a much less linear game, even giving us doses of exploration, saving distances with the open world, of course. In these maps, we can find secondary missions that will add content to the story, and we can even find documents or relic weapons. These weapons, more than new, are variants of the existing ones with some special module. We must always be attentive to our map in the HUD, since we will be shown points of interest or nearby objects.
The skiff will be an interesting means of transportation for our character, with which to cover long distances and save us a lot of road. Something that many players will miss is a fast travel mode, especially in events where we must cover long exploration distances.
Enemies, weapons and combat
One of the interesting updates is that the enemies now have a life bar and you can see how they lose it in the form of points when we attack them , in true Rol or Hack and Slash style.
Artificial intelligence seems to have improved a lot compared to the previous installment. Now it is not enough for us only to cover ourselves in the first thing that we find, since late the enemies will advance without quarter to our position. One way to counter this will be by cooperating with our partners and using the new mechanics of dragging enemies or partners or weakening them over the covers. In this sense it will be important that we take a look at the training mode and the controls so that everything becomes clearer to us. In general, our tactical and team skills should be better, because otherwise we will be dead quite easily depending on the level of difficulty we put.
Regarding weapons, we do not have excessive news, only in cases such as the lancer with its secondary shot or a hive weapon. The use of them is exactly the same, and the system of instantaneous action of recharging also. We imagine that it is a way to maintain the essence of the previous games, although it is true that a larger arsenal would have given us a little more freshness. And the same happens with the personalization of these, being a very limited matter forever.

As we have already mentioned, the Gears 5 is nourished by the Unreal Engine 4 graphics engine, one of the best in the video game segment and which here shows its maximum potential, both on PC and console. In fact, for Xbox One we have about 60 frames that the game was already sorely missing.
But we have played the PC version, so the limitation in FPS rate will only exist depending on our hardware. The official requirements that appear in Microsoft Store, where we have obtained the game, are the following.
Minimum requirements:
- OS: Windows 10 x64 18362.0 or later CPU: AMD FX-6000 Series or Intel i3 Skylake Memory: 6 GB RAM Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 or AMD Radeon R9 280 Storage: 70 GB of free space
Recommended requirements:
- OS: Windows 10 x64 18362.0 or later Processor: AMD Ryzen 3 or Intel i5 Skylake Memory: 8 GB RAM Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti or AMD Radeon RX 5700 Storage: 100 GB free space (for ultra textures)
performance
Let's now look at the performance it has shown in the benchmark test included in the game:
Quality | Resolutions | ||
1920 x 1080p | 2560 x 1440p | 3840 x 2160p | |
Ultra | 105 | 72 | 39 |
high | 130 | 89 | 48 |
Half | 155 | 105 | 56 |
The graphic power of this Gears 5 is simply a delight on PC, with a test bench like the one we have used, we will be able to handle the textures in Ultra and 4K at an average rate of 39 FPS, thanks to a remarkable AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT in its reference version. This shows that it is a very demanding game graphically, but as we will see in the results, in 2K / Ultra, we will comfortably exceed those 60 desired FPS.
A very important aspect in a shooter is frame drops, and during the time we have played, we have rarely suffered from such drops. The controllers we have played with are the Adrenalin 2019 19.9.1.
And we can still add an extra quality if we download the package of ultra-textures, raising to more than 100 GB the necessary storage space on our equipment. Even without them, the quality of the characters' skin, the particle effects and the rendering of the scenarios are at the highest level. We only have to play 5 minutes to check all this, because the start of the game in a natural environment makes him show his cards instantly and we simply fall in love.
The cinematics are made in real time by the graphics engine, demonstrating the solvency of Unreal 4 and the implementation made by the guys from The Coalition. The light treatment in dark environments has also been carried out in an exquisite way, giving us that feeling of oppression in closed places that a shooter so badly needs. Of course, we do not have the Ray Tracing capability in real time for the Nvidia RTX, perhaps it is the only missing point in the generation.
Final words and conclusion about Gears 5
In this way we come to the end of this little review with the Radeon RX 5700 XT of this Gears 5. A game that we could almost classify from the start for its novelties, graphics and the great work that The Coalition has done.
And we can start with the story, it is a cooperative shooter, but the campaign mode has an excellent story. We can say that much better, more worked and with which we connect much more with the characters. In addition, during the game we will have to make some choices that will affect the evolution of history, which gives an extra power of decision.
Another vital matter is the graphic section, and here the Unreal Engine 4 has been taken to the maximum to give us simply spectacular environments and quality of textures. In addition, the performance graph is extremely stable and without FPS drops when there is a large number of NPCs. Both controllers and GPUs have lived up to the circumstances, although in Ultra 4K quality we have not been able to reach 60 FPS.
We recommend our guide to the best graphics cards on the market
The dubbing in Spanish is perfectly carried out, with a correct interpretation and very enjoyable. Regarding the soundtrack, the songs are a step below what was expected, but at least the sound and ambient effects are at a good level.
Nor do we forget the gameplay in the campaign, with many new features including new mechanics and much larger scenarios with the possibility of exploration and that increase the hours of play with side missions and collectibles. It's a leap forward, yes, but we're not at the RPG game level in secondary content yet.
To this we add a restructured horde mode much more technically speaking. In fact, it is one of the most community-acclaimed game modes in this Gears 5. Other modes that add freshness to the game have also been included, such as escape mode or arcade quick game mode for those inexperienced in versus.
Undoubtedly, one of the most anticipated IPs of the year, and of which we knew the least, since The Coalition has guarded its letters with suspicion until the last moment. This game is available in Microsoft Store for a price of 69.99 for the Standard Edition and for 79.99 for the Ultimate Edition.
