New information suggests that Nvidia could launch the successors to its GeForce GTX 1060 and GTX 1050 series next year 2019, information that comes according to a statement from a representative of a major manufacturer who has spoken to PC Watch. GeForce RTX 2060 would arrive in 2019.

GeForce RTX 2060 would not arrive this year

This could mean that the high-end RTX 2080 Ti, RTX 2080 and RTX 2070 might be the only new Nvidia cards for this year 2018. This fact could be due to a combination of increasing inventories of 10 series GPUs and volumes. Insufficient mid-range 20 series RTX chips, in case the company even decides to extend real-time raytracing to mid-range graphics cards.

The way that Nvidia has designed designed the RTX 2070 with the TU106 chip instead of TU104 leads us to think that the company could launch the successor to the GTX 1060 series based on this chip, since the RTX 2070 uses it fully and Nvidia needs to make use of imperfect chips. An even smaller chip than the TU104 could power the successor to the GTX 1050 series.

The PC Watch interview also states that the Turing architecture was originally designed for Samsung's 10-nanometer manufacturing process, but it suffered delays and was redesigned for the 12nm process. This partially explains why Nvidia has not kept up with the generational consumption reduction curve of the previous 4 generations.

Nvidia has left the door open for a future Turing shrink to the 8nm manufacturing node, an extension of Samsung's 10nm node, with a reduction in transistor sizes.
