Gigabyte Aorus X299 Gaming 7 technical features

Unboxing and design

The Gigabyte Aorus X299 Gaming 7 is packed in a large cardboard box, dominated by a black background along with the silkscreen of the Aorus falcon logo. In the lower area we see the main certifications that this large motherboard incorporates.

In the rear area we find the back of it. The main technical characteristics of the motherboard are described in it. From our point of view, it is an excellent staging so that the user is informed of all the characteristics of the product.

Inside we find the following accessories:

  • Gigabyte Aorus X299 Gaming 7.CD motherboard with software and drivers. Instruction manual. Quick installation guide. SATA cable set. Back plate. Two Wi-Fi antennas. SLI bridge connector. 3-Way SLI bridge. Measure voltages. Two Velcro for wiring.

The Gigabyte Aorus X299 Gaming 7 It is a standard ATX format motherboard. It has dimensions of 30.5 cm x 24.4 cm for the LGA 2066 socket. As you can see, its design is really impressive. The thing promises!

Only above it is the Aorus X299 Gaming 9 that will be released on the same day today and that we will play soon. The truth is that the combination of matte black PCB and black heatsinks will allow us to combine with any internal component.

For the most curious, a quick look at the rear area.

The Aorus series is the Gigabyte reference series for motherboards. And it is that its role is maximum and it has excellent passive cooling both in the areas of the power phases and in the X299 chipset.

It features nothing more and nothing less than 7 digital power phases supported by Ultra Durable technology and high-end Nichicon capacitors. What does all this set of technologies do? offers us the best experience, durability and overclocking possibilities on a high-end board.

Although the X299 chipset is very cool, it has a great heatsink.

Thanks to the 8 DDR4 RAM sockets it allows us to install a total of 128 GB for the Intel Core i7 processors with 6 or more cores and the i9 with frequencies of up to 4333 Mhz compatible with the XMP 2.0 profile. Next to the slots, we see an internal USB 3.1 connection, also another USB 3.0 connection and two 4-pin PWM fan heads.

We cannot forget the incorporation of Double Locking Bracket that provides a better grip of the cards for a more optimal operation. Anti-Sulfur Resistor Design and Ultra Durable Memory Armor technologies protect all major electronic components and DDR4 DIMMM slots from wear and tear so they last like new for much longer.

The Gigabyte Aorus X299 Gaming 7 has a layout that stands out from the rest, since it allows us to connect up to four Nvidia graphics cards in SLI and AMD in CrossFireX. It features a total of 5 PCI Express x16 connections, excluding PCI Express x4 and x1 connections. We find it a very good alternative since we have much more versatility.

Each PCI Express slot incorporates a strengthening called Ultra Durable PCIe Armor that is responsible for strengthening the PCI-Express ports to avoid less suffering from very heavy graphics cards. Without forgetting that it improves the connection between card and motherboard.

Regarding high-end storage, we have three slots to install storage disks with an M.2 NVMe interface with type size 2242/2260/2280/22110 (42/60/80 and 110mm).

Here we see once we removed the Aorus M.2 Thermal Guard heatsink. It has a small thermald pad and from what we have seen it improves a lot compared to the competition.

It incorporates a sound card signed by the Realtek ALC1220 chip but improved by the Gigabyte team. It incorporates a high-end DAC, such as the ESS9018K2M and an excellent amplifier for professional helmets up to 600Ω. This allows us to install top-of-the-range peripherals without the need to purchase a dedicated sound card. It is also complemented by Creative Sound Core3D software that will help us get the most out of both playing and listening to music . All a detail by Aorus!

We resume storage again. And to tell you that I have a total of 8 SATA III 6 Gb / s connections that will allow us to install a wide variety of hard drives and SSDs to have enough storage. But be careful, look at the manual of your motherboard, that if we activate an M.2 surely we will lose some SATA connection?

We also have to tell you about the advanced RGB Fusion lighting system that consists of a total of eight light zones programmable via software and configuration in 16.8 million colors. In addition we have at our disposal a total of 8 different light effects and it allows us to install up to two conventional LED strips to get the most out of the lighting.

The new RGB software allows users to access different lighting profiles in various colors so that they can choose the one that best meets their needs. It even offers you the possibility of synchronizing the lighting system with your favorite music so that it follows the rhythm or with the temperature of the processor so that it changes according to the load of the system. The advanced mode will give you access to personalization individually for one of the areas.

Regarding connectivity, it has two network cards, the first signed by Intel Gigabit and a second ideal for the most demanding players: Killer E2500. But if you are more of a wireless connection, it also has an 802.11AC wireless network card with the Killer 1535 chip and a Bluetooth 4.1 connection.

Finally, we detail all the rear connections that the motherboard incorporates:

  • PS / 2.4 connection, USB 2.0 connections, Wifi connection, HDMI, Displayport, Two LAN connections, USB 3.1 Type A. 5.1 Sound card.

To check the stability of the i9-7900X processor at 4200 MHZ (stock values) and the motherboard we have stressed with Prime 95 Custom and air cooling. The graphics we have used is an Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti, without further delay, let's see the results obtained in our tests with a 1920 x 1080 monitor.

BIOS

Once we entered the BIOS it reminded us of the countless Z270 motherboards that we have been testing during this last season. We see a palpable improvement over previous generations: X79 and X99. And it is that now, Gigabyte has been put the batteries and offers a BIOS stable as a rock and that allows us to ocean our processor to the maximum in this enthusiastic series. We are very happy with the results obtained. Good job guys!

Final words and conclusion about Gigabyte Aorus X299 Gaming 7

The Gigabyte Aorus X299 Gaming 7 is about more complete motherboards that we have tested so far. A very elegant design, a black PCB, a wide variety of PCI Express connections, compatibility with SLI and CrossFireX and a great potential for overclocking for Intel Skylake-X processors are some features in its cover letter.

In our test bench together with an Intel Core i9-7900X and an 11GB Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti graphics card, it has more than matched. Taking a few heart attack results when we have oceanized at 4200 MHz the new processor 10 physical cores and 20 logical cores. Although we have been able to go up to 4400 MHz without any problem, but the results were down due to the basic thermal paste that includes these new processors.

On storage it has 8 SATA III connections at 6 Gbps / s and two M.2 connections. One of them is equipped with the new Aorus M.2 Thermal Guard heatsink, which drops dramatically to more than 12ºC. It also incorporates a VROC connection that through a payment key to Intel we can mount up to 20 M.2 and get breakneck speeds.

We recommend reading our guide to the best motherboards on the market

We also have to make special mention of the Realtek sound card that comes enhanced with an excellent DAC and allows us to wear high-end headsets up to 600A. On connectivity we have a double Gigabit LAN connection (Killer + Intel), a Killer Wifi 802.11 AC card and a Bluetooth 4.1 connection. Can it be more complete? Almost impossible.

Finally, talk about its RGB lighting and it is that of all these new motherboards it is one of the ones that we have liked the most so far with 8 zones configurable via software. Good work Gigabyte!

Its store price will be close to 487 euros and we believe it will be among the best options on the market. If you are interested in a high-end motherboard with a price within the reach of almost any mortal, the Gigabyte Aorus X299 Gaming 7 is possibly your motherboard.
