Thunderbolt 3 is one of the interfaces with the greatest potential thanks to its enormous 40 Gbps bandwidth, however its adoption is being very discreet and progressing very slowly. Gigabyte has wanted to take advantage of the full potential of Thunderbolt 3 with a dock that uses this technology to provide up to 8 USB 3 connectors.

This is the new Gigabyte Thunderbolt 3 dock

The new Gigabyte dock takes the Thunderbolt 3 interface and splits its PCI-Express tracks to provide a total of 8 USB 3 ports, four of them are Type A and the other four are Type C for great compatibility and versatility. It could not be confirmed if these are USB 3.0 ports with 5 Gbps or USB 3.1 ports with 10 Gbps.

In case of being the latter, a set of PLX switch and ASMedia ASM1142 controllers would be used to provide the necessary functionality. In case of being USB 3.1 ports, the user could not take full advantage of them when all eight are working at the same time because it would exceed the bandwidth of the Thunderbolt 3 interface.

The dock does not require additional power, so it gets all the necessary energy through its Thunderbolt 3 interface, something that makes it much more practical and portable to be enjoyed everywhere. For now, nothing is known about the price, but it can be a great opportunity for Gigabyte to position itself very well in a market where similar devices are much more limited by offering a much lower number of ports.
