It is not strange to us that some of the functions of Android come and go in the different versions of the Google operating system. This causes developers and users to complain in some cases when a trusted feature is suddenly announced to be discontinued. This time, Android phone owners are probably breathing a sigh of relief, as Google has just announced that as of December the Android Nearby notification feature will no longer send spam messages to users.

Google decides to end Android Nearby, something that will benefit users of the platform

Google implemented the Android Nearby feature set in response to what was then a growing interest in ad-related features. These location-based services would be used primarily for advertising purposes, notifying customers that they are within range of offers and promotions and other information data.

As expected, notifications that those tidbits sent as Android notifications were abused. Google reports that it noticed an increase in spam notifications earlier this year. Rather than trying to filter them, they decided it wasn't worth the effort and instead would discontinue nearby notifications.

So on December 6 of this year, users will no longer receive such notifications. That, however, does not mean that Android Nearby is going to disappear, it will continue to exist and it still has other APIs such as nearby messages. Hopefully, abusers will cease their effort to annoy users. What do you think of the action taken by Google? We would like to know your opinion.
