During the Google I / O 2017 event, the Mountain View giant announced Android Go, a reduced version of the Android operating system recommended for low-end phones, with 1GB of RAM or less memory.

Android Go, a new version of Android oriented to devices with 1GB of RAM or less memory

The new Android Go is a project quite similar to Android One, a Google initiative that was primarily aimed at emerging markets and developing countries. Through this project, manufacturers were able to create cheap smartphones that received Android updates as soon as Nexus or Pixel mobiles. But it was never very successful, after all.

However, Google has returned to the fray with Android Go, a version of the operating system developed specifically for Android phones or tablets with 512MB or 1GB of RAM and that is based on Android O. Basically, if a device has very little RAM, you will automatically receive a version of Android Go.

Apart from being an optimized version to open applications faster or provide smooth operation on slower phones, Android Go will also include some optimized applications, such as the Play Store, which will only recommend the installation of applications compatible with the least powerful smartphones.

Applications made for Android Go will feature energy saving features and performance optimizations. For example, the version of Chrome for Android Go will incorporate some options for saving data and bandwidth. The same will happen with YouTube Go, an app that will allow content playback or streaming without having to worry too much about data consumption or system performance.

All the applications of the Google suite will also be optimized to run as smoothly as possible on Android Go, and regardless of the hardware of the mobile.

Finally, Google's new operating system will also come with support for multiple languages.

Taking into account that this initiative is based on Android O, we will probably see the first devices with Android Go later this year, since at the moment Android O is barely in beta phase and will remain so for the next few months.
