Guide: set up asus rt

Anonim

On this occasion we propose something simple but that will surely be useful for many users who have or are thinking of contracting FFTH with Movistar.

We are going to configure an Asus router (in our case it will be the RT-AC68U, but the steps are identical for any current RT series model) to connect it directly to the ONT (the device that the fiber reaches) from Movistar, allowing us to do without of the neutral router that they include, significantly improving the performance of our connection, the consumption, and also of course the configuration possibilities.

What do we need

The only requirements necessary to configure a router in this case are

  1. That our router supports PPoE connections (we have it in any neutral router, very common in many ISPs for both ADSL and fiber). That our router supports VLAN tagging. Movistar uses the VLAN with ID 6 for internet traffic, and we need a router that knows how to interpret that. This is a little more complicated to find, and many routers do not include it, so we are doing the guide with a model like this, which integrates this functionality in the stock firmware. Any router that supports the DD-WRT firmware will also allow us to make this adjustment and get what we need, although the steps will be a bit more complicated.

Steps to follow

  1. We must connect the router to the ONT, the cable must go from the WAN port of our router to the first RJ-45 port of the ONT. We turn on both devices, we connect to the router either by cable or by the WiFi network (which in the case of the RT-AC68U is called ASUS and ASUS_5G by default) and we access the configuration of our router. If it is the first time that we connect it, it should enter directly as soon as you open the browser, but if it does not, just write the IP of our router, or easier, router.asus.com in our browser. If you ask us for a password, by default the access data is admin / admin on Asus routers

If you already have your router configured with your password and encryption of the wireless network, skip directly to step 4. Otherwise, the router forces us to change to the default password and recommends us to put a password for the wireless network (practice that from professional review we highly recommend, WPA2 if possible).

Either immediately after configuring the previous parameters, or after pressing the button "Internet fast configuration" if we were already using the router previously, we will arrive at the following screen:

We must select PPoE, and after checking the option Special requirement of ISP we will see the menu on the right, where we must select Manual and fill in the first box (VID value for internet) with value 6. The rest we will leave as is. In the following menu we must enter the username and password, which in the case of movistar are

    - User: adslppp @ telefonicanetpa

    - Password: adslppp

as you can see in the image:

We have already finished. In some guides they recommend cloning the Mac from the phone router, but we can confirm that it is not necessary, it works directly. If after a few seconds we do not have internet, the easiest solution is to unplug the router and the ONT from the power and connect them again. If everything went well, we will see a screen like this:

    with any x numbers.

We add that it is also possible to configure the router to connect the image decoder through one of the LAN ports, although we must say that the process is much longer and more complicated, we will cover it in future guides if we see interest in the subject.

If we want to change this data (to undo the changes without resetting the router, or if we have been confused by something), we have the settings that we have just seen in the WAN menu (PPoE username and password) and the LAN menu (VLAN configuration)).

Do not hesitate to leave any problem or question in the comments and we will respond as soon as possible.
