Honor 4x review

Huawei decided long ago to create as an extension of the company the Honor brand, intended for high-end mobiles. This Honor 4X however should be considered more as a mid-range that aims at high-end. Don't miss our comprehensive review!

We thank Honor for trusting the product for their analysis:

Technical characteristics Honor 4X

Honor 4X

Despite the fact that the dimensions of the screen make this smartphone a phablet (52.9mm x 77.2mm x 8.7mm), after holding it in your hand, it does not give the feeling of a terminal that is too big since the screen takes advantage of a lot well the front of the device.

However, in the purely aesthetic and ergonomic aspect, it is worth mentioning the use of plastic in its entirety as a manufacturing material. Something that has in its favor the reduction of the overall weight of the device and an increase in the support of the back cover that is made in the form of rough mesh. On the contrary, the general impression given by the terminal is of a low-end finish, and crunches between the pieces do not help either.

Honor is committed to a sober but functional design with straight lines except for the most rounded edges. At the top edge is the classic mini-jack headphone jack. On the right edge is where we find all the physical buttons of this terminal because the left one is empty. Maybe it's out of habit but the fact that I have the volume buttons on the top and the power button on the bottom, keeps freaking me out. Finally, the micro USB input and the speaker are located at the bottom.

It should be noted that although the rear cover can be uncovered, the battery is not removable. Along with the battery there are also two SIM slots and one for the microSD card. Although in our terminal to analyze the back is white, it can also be found in black.

As indicated in the features, the Honor 4X has a 5.5-inch screen with 1280x720p resolution, which gives a pixel density of 267dpi. In theory, a low resolution and low density compared to most smartphones that we are used to but that in practice and using IPS technology look quite good. Something better could be expected, but as we will see, this terminal has disparate characteristics.

An example of what was said previously are the buttons to move around at least, they are off the screen. Which for some is a success, but they are not backlit. Something that today is hardly seen anymore, and that will be sorely missed in dimly lit places.

IPS technology as usual gives us a range of colors less saturated than AMOLED screens and that you like more or less according to taste. The viewing angle is also quite a correct aspect on this type of screen and just by turning the terminal a lot, it gets a bit darker.

One aspect that I personally dislike is the low brightness range that the screen offers. A defect that is possibly solvable by software. Outdoors in full sun, you need to have the maximum brightness if you want to be able to use it.

Sound

As I mentioned above, the Honor 4x's speaker is located on the bottom edge of the phone. An ideal place if you have the terminal in hand in an upright position or if it rests on a flat surface. Although when the phone is held horizontally, the position of our hand can slightly hinder the sound output, something that is not very convenient considering that after the tests carried out with videos and music we have concluded that the maximum power of the speaker is deficient, especially in environments with high ambient noise.

performance

The performance on the Honor 4X is pretty good overall, this is largely due to its 2GB of RAM. Minimum amount on any mobile today and that makes moving around the EMUI 3.0 menus and applications fluid enough after normal use.

The processor that mounts the 4X is its own, a Hisilicon Kirin 620 8-core 1.2GHz 64-bit and the GPU a mali 450. After some stress tests with some games, the terminal undoubtedly performs quite well despite the fact that its processor is not one of the most cutting-edge and outperforms other mid-range terminals with similar characteristics.

Battery and connectivity

The battery of the Honor 4X we can say without mistake that it is one of the strengths of this terminal. And it is that despite the 3000 mAh that the battery has, which are already enough, the lack of a Full HD screen helps the battery to last many hours. Which a server always sees more important than other aspects. Thanks Honor 4X !

Although companies always estimate a maximum battery life, that is not followed. After using the terminal, the average duration time is around 31h with a lot of use but this time can be increased using the energy saving mode that we can find in the menu.

Regarding connectivity, highlight the possibility of using the 4G network, which already has so many smartphones as standard and Bluetooth 4.0. However it does not include NFC.

OS

MIUI 3.0 and Android Kit Kat 4.4.2 is what we find in this terminal today. You may or may not like this layer of personalization, even if you don't personally. But the bleeding thing about a device at this point is not having a more updated version of Android.

WE RECOMMEND HONOR 8A: The brand's new mid-range

Between one thing and another, we found before a somewhat outdated interface to what is carried today. An example is the absence of an application box, which results in having all the icons on the main screens and having to resort to creating folders or launching a launcher. It will push back the most foodies, but surely those who settle for less will like it.

Another feature quite against is the little internal capacity that we have left for applications. Less than 4GB! Really insufficient despite the fact that we always have the option of using a microSD card because there are applications that only support internal memory.

One of the few aspects that may be liked and that not all terminals have, is that of being able to turn on the phone with a double tap on the screen and that of drawing a letter with the screen off and instantly open an application. But they are not fundamental aspects to positively value this section.

Camera

This terminal mounts a 13-megapixel Sony camera in the back along with the LED flash and in the front we find a 5-megapixel sensor.

It should be noted in this section the good performance offered by the front camera. Especially the photos taken with good lighting. In which a fairly accurate color capture is perceived without oversaturating them and offering a more than correct dynamic range.

Sharpness is also a remarkable aspect in this type of environment, and it is not entirely bad when taking photos in less nocturnal scenes where it also performs correctly but showing a slight noise. It is obvious but you cannot ask for much more.

The software used in the camera is quite far from that of other high-end terminals and yet it supplies the native Android quite well, providing some extra adjustments and filters, such as the so-called: Beauty Mode, which enhances the image in both the front camera and in the back. Very good Honor 4X !

conclusion

We find a mid-range phone with very different sections. The Honor 4X is fluid and has a good camera and battery, but nevertheless it sins in terms of the operating system, internal memory, screen resolution and design. We can find it on amazon.es around € 190, a price somewhat high for me and therefore I would advise waiting for an offer.
