HP has announced the launch of its 3D metal printing technology in Chicago. The new technology, named HP Metal Jet, aims to offer the mass production of functional metal parts with up to 50 times higher productivity compared to current technologies.

HP Metal Jet, metal reaches 3D printing

HP Metal Jet is a voxel-level binder jetting technology that uses low-cost metal injection molding (MIM) powders, starting with stainless steel and a binding agent to build parts within a 430 x 320 bed size x 200 mm. Once unpacked, these parts are sintered in a standard furnace to produce high-quality isotropic components that meet ASTM standards.

HP has helped lead this transformation by pioneering 3D mass production of plastic parts and now taking a new step with HP Metal Jet, a revolutionary 3D metal printing technology. The implications are enormous, with the automotive, industrial and medical sectors producing billions of pieces of metal each year.

Partner GKN produces more than 3 billion components a year for industrial and automotive applications, and expects to print millions of production grade HP Metal Jet parts for its customers starting next year. No stranger to 3D printing, Volkswagen is evaluating the manufacture of customizable mass parts, such as key chains, and is seeking to leverage technology for the mass production of lightweight, certified metal components for new product lines as part of a multi-year plan. The company believes the sweet spot for its metal technology will be in series of 50, 000 parts or less, focusing first on stainless steel.

Starting today, HP is inviting customers to pre-order the Metal Jet systems, which will begin shipping in 2020 and will be available by 2021 at an approximate price of $ 399, 000.
