Despite the Kirin 980 chipset being revealed just a couple of months ago, Huawei is already working on another chipset that would use a 7nm FinFET node. According to a report from China, the Kirin 990 chipset is already in preparation and will arrive in the first quarter of 2019. The big news with respect to the Kirin 980, will be the dedicated 5G modem for next generation wireless connectivity speeds.

Huawei is preparing the Kirin 990 SoC with dedicated 5G

According to industry sources, TSMC will manufacture the new chipset, and Huawei's subsidiary HiSilicon will invest more than $ 28 million in research and development, as the cost of testing is exorbitant. Like the Kirin 980 SoC, the Kirin 990 chipset will also be manufactured using the 7nm process mentioned above, and will also include Cortex-A76 cores.

While the overall architecture of the new chipset is the same as that of the Kirin 980 chipset, it will presumably be the company's first processor to feature the Balong 5000 modem, which is certified for 5G speeds. Additionally, the new chip is expected to offer a 10% performance boost and consume 10% less power than its predecessor who do not have a 5G modem. At this time, no further information is available on the alleged chipset.

As Huawei has not commented on the existence of this SoC, we will have to wait for more reports to be published to know if this news is credible. The recently launched Kirin 980 powers some of the new phones from the Huawei and Honor brands, such as the Mate 20 and Magic 2 phones.

It seems that the next dedicated chips for mobile phones will all include support for 5G connections, which will deliver outrageous Internet speeds to smartphone users.
