Virtualbox is one of the best solutions for managing open source licensed virtual machines (OSE) . Windows 10 was launched in early August and many users have already been updated for its excellent improvements in the DirectX 12 engine and its new management and desktop shortcuts.

In this tutorial I am going to teach you how to install Windows 10 in VirtualBox in 5 easy steps.

Windows 10 versions and minimum requirements

Installation for all existing 32/64-bit versions of Windows 10: Windows 10 Home, Windows 10 Pro, and Windows 10 Enterprise. In my case I use Windows 10 PRO on the desktop PC and on my laptop since I migrated both computers for free.

The minimum requirements are as follows:

  • 1 GHz or higher processor or SoC. RAM memory: 1 GB for 32 bits or 2 GB for 64 bits Hard disk space: 16 GB for the 32 bit operating system or 20 GB for the 64 bit one. Graphics cards support DirectX 9 or WDDM 1.0 driver. Screen resolution 800 x 600.

Step 1: Download Windows 10 image

If you have an image in your possession you can issue this step. If not, we will download the Media Creation Tool application from Microsoft to create an image for us according to our needs. On the page we will choose if we want the system in 32 bits or 64 bits.

Once downloaded we will run the application and it will launch a first screen, we will choose the option " Create an installation medium for another PC " and click next.

We choose the language (Spanish), the version (Windows 10 PRO) and the architecture (64 bits x64) and click next.

We are interested in downloading the image to our computer, so we will choose the ISO File option. We choose the path to save the image and wait for it to complete (this process can take several minutes or hours since it depends on your internet line).

Step 2: Install Virtual Box

We can download Virtual Box from its download section. In our case we choose the x86 / amd64 option. Its installation is as simple as any Windows application, the only thing to keep in mind is that it will create a virtual network card controller.

Step 3: Create a virtual machine

Once Virtual Box is installed and started we proceed to our first virtual machine. We will press the new button.

A screen opens that allows us to put a name, the operating system (Microsoft Word) and the version in our case Windows 10 - 64 Bits. We will press next.

It depends on the equipment we have, the minimum use is 2 GB of RAM. If you have 4GB you will go right, if in your case you have 8GB or 16GB (as the server) you will not have a problem. We leave the 2048 MB and click next.

If you have any virtual disk created you can use it. In my case (and most) we are going to create a new one. Click to create.

In this case we choose VDI which is the file type of the virtual hard disk that we are going to create.

Since we are not going to want to fill our hard disk (I have an SSD and that does not interest me) the most sensible option is for the file to fill up whenever it needs more space. We click on dynamic reserved and click next.

Now it tells us where we will keep the disk and its capacity. I have left the 32GB, since 20GB is occupied by the hard disk. Click on next and the final summary of our virtual machine appears.

Step 4: Configure the virtual machine

Before starting the virtual machine, we must set the Internet connection to RED (we choose the bridge option or in Spanish, bridge) and to add the ISO image we go to the storage section.

Step 5: Windows 10 installation

We turn on the virtual machine and a message will appear to choose the ISO image. In our case, the one we prepared in step 1. Select and press ok, and the installation screen will appear.

Now it is as simple as following the steps of the Windows 10 wizard and we will have Windows 10 installed in VirtualBox to be able to enjoy and deal with it.
