Earlier this month Intel introduced its Core i5 + and Core i7 + processors for desktops and laptops, which are still their conventional processors, accompanied by an Intel Optane cache module to speed up the system's hard drive or SSD.

Intel Core i5 + and Core i7 + on sale now with a 16GB Optane drive

These new Intel Core i5 + and Core i7 + are aimed at customers who want to improve the performance of their storage subsystems, but without investing in a full-fledged SSD. Bundles include Core i7 + 8700, Core i5 + 8500, and Core i5 + 8400 processors along with 16GB Optane cache drives priced at $ 340, $ 240, and $ 215 respectively.

The company is taking advantage of the demand for high-speed storage subsystems, which combine the responsiveness of SSDs and the large capacities of HDDs, to increase the production of its 3D XPoint memory, gaining experience in its high-volume manufacturing, and improving performance, to address the needs of the enterprise and data center market segments in the future.

Intel has made some notable changes to its caching subsystem to improve its usability. Optane software can now cache data from any HDD, and not just the primary one as it has been up until now, opening usage scenarios with secondary HDDs for users who have already invested in an SSD.

Intel says that a 32GB Optane Cache SSD accelerated hybrid storage subsystem is 1.7 - 3.9 times faster compared to a non-accelerated HDD-based subsystem.
