Intel develops xeon phi 'knight mill' processors with up to 72 cores
Table of contents:
- Intel is developing the new Intel Xeon Phi '' Knights Mill '' family with up to 72 cores and AVX-512 instructions
- Intel Xeon Phi (Knights Mill)
Intel is one of the pioneers in the server and equipment market that requires a large workload, especially when it comes to artificial intelligence and neural networks. To further increase the computing capabilities of these devices, Intel is developing the new Intel Xeon Phi "Knights Mill" family with up to 72 cores.

In total there will be three new processors based on Intel Xeon Phi 'Knights Mill', which have been made known thanks to Intel's ARK database. The three new SKUs will have between 64 and 72 cores with a TDP of 320W.
The Xeon Phi 'Knights Mill' processors are a new iteration of the old 'Knights Landing' family, with a change in silicon to house the additional AVX-512 instructions. As far as we can tell, these parts will only be available as socketable hosts and not as PCIe cards.
Knights Landing's (KNL) successor is Knights Mill (KNM), which was detailed in Hot Chips. For the most part, KNL and KNM CPUs would be nearly identical in terms of number of cores, frequencies, 36 PCIe 3.0 tracks, 16GB of high bandwidth MCDRAM memory, and six DRAM channels, but KNM offers a small design tweak for allow AVX-512 instructions.
The big difference here is that the Intel Xeon Phi Knights Mill offers only half the performance of double precision than Knights Landing, but doubles the performance in single precision and up to four times in variable precision.
As we see, these processors do not require high clock speeds, which is compensated by the immense number of cores and threads it has.
