Intel ships the first optane memories for testing
Table of contents:
Intel has already started shipping the first units of its revolutionary Optane memory to its partners so they can start testing, however you will still have to wait until next year to buy a module with this technology.
Intel ships the first Optane memories in DDR4 DIMM format
At CES the first versions of Optane were shown with a reduced capacity and that connect to the storage slots of the motherboard, now Intel has begun to send the first Optane units in DDR4 DIMM format that in the future will seek to replace DRAM on large servers and of course they connect to the DDR4 DIMM slots on the motherboard.
The advantage of Optane memories in DIMM format is that they can reach a density 10 times higher than RAM, also the speed of this new technology is enough to replace RAM without a significant loss of performance, so we could see the unification of the storage and RAM in the same memory. With this we would have a new generation of servers (and why not home PCs) capable of using an enormous amount of memory as RAM.
Be that as it may, users will still have to wait a long time for the new Optane to replace the NAND of our computers, and even more to see the possibility of detaching ourselves from the separation between RAM and storage.
