Intel Launches Free Open Ray Tracing Denial Library

In an ideal world, when we generate images with R ay Tracing, each pixel on the screen is struck by a ray of light. In real life, this is not possible in real / reasonable time.

So noise reduction is an essential part of image post-processing with Ray tracing, since it eliminates or reduces the visual noise generated by the low interaction between rays and pixels on the screen. Intel has released a free Open Image Denoiser (OIDN) library for Ray Tracing.

Fixing the rendering

Under the Apache 2.0 license, OIDN is part of the Intel Rendering Framework. Apparently, the library is based on CPU usage, scaling with the number of cores available and according to intel it works on any X64 with at least the SSE4.2 instruction set, although you can take advantage of the AVX2 and AVX-512 to speed up considerably the results.

The closest and most closed alternative would be Nvidia's AI denoiser, which uses a combination of deep learning and GPU computing to achieve its results.

OIDN is available on the Intel GitHub
