Intel optane dimm arrives to unify ram and storage
Table of contents:
Intel has released its first Optane DIMM persistent memory modules which are intended to unify the storage and RAM of a computer into a single large capacity memory pool.
Intel's first Optane DIMM memory modules launched, all the features of this genius
Intel takes another step forward with the arrival of Optane technology in a DIMM module format, putting X-Point memory closer to the CPU than ever. The new Optane DIMM persistent memory modules are designed to be used as an extension and accelerator for DRAM memory. These modules come in capacities of 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB per DIMM, offering storage densities that are light years from today's DDR4 DRAM.

Switching to a DIMM form factor also significantly reduces Optane memory latency, making it much more viable as a DRAM replacement or extension, as PCIe-based solutions require more steps before accessing resources of the CPU. When information about Optane is required, systems can access it exceptionally fast thanks to its DIMM design, which offers significant latency and performance benefits over a PCIe SSD storage medium.
Itel is currently showing its Optane DIMMs to customers, and has promised drives with 192GB of DRAM and 1TB of Optane persistent memory in early 2019. Optane DC memory will be compatible with the next generation of Intel Xeon Server processors, although at this time it is not known whether or not this functionality will be limited to select high-end platforms.
