Intel Optane has always stood as an interim between DRAM and NAND flash technology, offering non-volatile storage with speeds and responsiveness that often extend to both sides of the line between the two technologies. With the new Intel Optane H10 SSD drives, the Californian company wants to merge Optane's speed with the capacity and low costs that QLC NAND memory can offer.

Intel Optane H10 manages to combine Optane and QLC memories in one SSD

What if Intel merged its Optane memory with a QLC SSD, offering a large cache that is significantly larger than any DRAM cache SSD, while also providing the ability to speed up certain frequently used files? This which has always been thought of as a possibility is now a reality thanks to Intel's new Optane H10 SSD.

Optane H10 SSD will come in various flavors, a model with 16GB of storage with Optane and 256GB of QLC memory and models with 32GB of Optane memory and 512GB or 1TB of QLC NAND storage respectively.

As fast as the Samsung 970 Pro that uses TLC memory

According to the next slide, both the Optane and QLC sections of the drive merge to form a single volume, with Optane storage accelerating the files needed for important tasks. Basically Optane works on these drives as a large cache.

If the slide below is representative of common workloads, the Intel Optane H10 SSD ("Teton Glacier") will be able to offer speeds that rival or exceed those of Samsung's 970 Pro while using the affordable QLC NAND. Compared to an equivalent SSD that uses only QLC, Intel's Teton Glacier was able to deliver twice the performance in the PCMARK Vantage hard drive test, demonstrating the benefits of Optane's acceleration.

If these results are true, Intel has managed to fix the problems associated with both QLC NAND and Optane memory in one go, creating a product that should offer incredible performance at a more reasonable price.
