We have an interesting leak about the new top-of-the-range GPU that Intel is designing based on the Xe graphics architecture, using AMD's MCM design.
Intel Xe could have a top-of-the-line 500W consumer MCM GPU
The good folks at DigitalTrends managed to get some internal introductions from Intel's GPU design team and this confirms what we long suspected: Intel is borrowing the same design from AMD and working on an MCM-based graphics card.
The documentation names a 4-board MCM GPU (Tiles) with a TDP of 500W.
This slide lists the future of Intel Xe graphics architecture. The company plans to start with a 1 Tile chart, eventually moving to 4 Tiles.
If we assume that TGL GFX / DG1 constitutes a Tile, then we are looking at 4096 cores for the four Tile variants. A 4096 core 500W GPU is meaningless and this is because nowhere on the Intel slides ensures that all tiles will be the same. Most likely, we are seeing multiple tile sizes in a single matrix. Economies of scale in MCM GPUs kick in very quickly and this would be the perfect opportunity for Intel to cut costs even further considering that it owns its own factories.
This engineering platform is most likely for internal testing only as you are using a custom type of PCIe (500W exceeds the specifications for PCIe as PCIe 4.0 is limited to 300W). The 500W variant also outputs 48V in total. This is crazy when it comes to direct current. To put this in context, most computers' uninterruptible power units (UPSs) typically use a 48V input (and can output over 2000W of power).
