The final version of the KDE Plasma 5.7 desktop environment will arrive on July 5, 2016 to try to offer a better alternative to users of GNU / Linux distributions that are committed to this environment.

KDE Plasma 5.7 offers several improvements for Wayland but is still dependent on X11

Martin Gräßlin, developer of KDE, has talked about some of the improvements that will come with the next version of this desktop environment. KDE Plasma 5.7 will arrive with some major improvements for the new generation Wayland graphics server that is intended to become the new standard to the detriment of the outdated X11.

Gräßlin started his report on the new Wayland functionalities implemented in KDE Plasma 5.7 talking about the lack of the new xdg-shell support in the new KDE frameworks 5.23.0. Due to this important absence, despite betting strongly on Wayland, the applications written in GTK of KDE Plasma 5.7 will continue to work with X11. He has also taken the opportunity to talk about the improvements introduced in the task manager, the virtual keyboard and more to better adapt to Wayland and offer a better user experience.

The new KDE Plasma 5.7 will reach end users with a level of stability that will make it suitable for use as a primary option on computers, something that demonstrates the good path that the new desktop environment is taking. However, as always it is advisable to be careful when adopting such drastic changes in our equipment to avoid unpleasant surprises.
