Yangtze Memory Technologies, or YMTC, the Chinese government-owned NAND memory maker, has made a rather shocking announcement today: According to them, they will be able to bring the speeds of DDR4 RAM to NAND memory. We explain the importance of this announcement.

NAND faster than ever?

Currently, DDR4 memory transfer rates range from 17GB / s (not Gbps) to 25.6GB / s, while NAND memories of a current NVMe SSD can reach approximately 3.5GB / s read sequential or 2.1GB / s sequential write. Hence, this announcement presents the possibility of an advance never seen in the industry and of great importance for components such as SSDs or internal memory of mobile devices.

The new technology, called "Xtacking Technology" also boasts faster development (specifically, time-to-market or time to market) and higher bit density than traditional NAND. The latter makes us wonder what will be the reliability of these memories at breakneck speed, since unless they have some special characteristics, higher bit density is usually related to lower durability.

Despite the fact that YMTC is a new player in this market, we must bear in mind that it is owned by none other than the Chinese government, and has financing of $ 24 billion, which lends some credibility to its objectives.

Its CEO, Simon Yang, announced in a press release that he will speak tomorrow at the Flash Memory Summit to detail how they will achieve this achievement. This is in addition to the announcement of the ADATA conference on the new M.3 memories, but what matters most will be to see how many months or years it takes to see this progress and if it is really as large as the one announced by YMTC.
