We have come across an interesting test from NJ Tech testing the capabilities of the 3GB Radeon HD 7970 almost seven years after its market launch. We are talking about what was the company's top of the range card, and the first to hit the market with the GCN architecture. How does it behave with current juices?

Radeon HD 7970 3GB builds muscle against the new 3GB GeForce GTX 1050

The 3GB Radeon HD 7970 was released in the third quarter of 2011, just a few months before the GeForce GTX 680 based on the Kepler architecture. Both cards defended their company for many months until the GeForce GTX 780 and Radeon R9 390 arrived. The Radeon HD 7970 always had the advantage of having 3 GB of memory, compared to 2 GB of the GeForce GTX 680. A larger amount of memory allows a graphics card to age better, so hopefully it has held up well over the years.

NJ Tech compares the 3GB Radeon HD 7970 with the current 3GB GeForce GTX 1050, a card that's almost seven years newer and based on a much more evolved Pascal architecture than the first-generation GCN. The Radeon HD 7970 3GB is capable of beating its rival in most games, with a minimal difference but that exists.

Where the 3GB Radeon HD 7970 "clicks" is in power consumption, almost three times higher than that of the 3GB GeForce GTX 1050, although this is logical since we are comparing a card manufactured at 28nm with a manufactured at 14 nm. What is clear is that the 3GB Radeon HD 7970 is still very capable in the middle of 2018.
