Samsung has announced in a press release that the new Quadro graphics cards will make use of their recently released high-speed GDDR6 memory. Know them
The GDDR6 from Samsung, maximum power for the new Quadro
The new 16 Gigabit (Gb, not GB) memories with GGDR6 technology began mass production in Q1 2018, and RTX Quadro will be the first products to make use of them.
The new memories will feature very high speeds of up to 14 gigabits per second (Gbps) and a bandwidth of 672GB / s. Enhancements over GDDR5 include twice the memory capacity per die, which was 8Gb on the company's GDDR5 memories, 75% faster transfer speeds in a single die (56GB / s, not Gbps), at the same time which improves energy efficiency by up to 35%.
This has been achieved thanks to the new manufacturing process at 10nm over the previous 20nm, and at a lower voltage, which will be 1.35V instead of the 1.55V that were more common in GDDR5.
It is a great privilege to have been selected by NVIDIA to launch Samsung's 16Gb GDDR6, and to have enjoyed the trust of their design team in making our key contribution to NVIDIA Quadro RTX graphics Jim Elliott, Senior Vice President, Samsung Semiconductor
Our Quadro RTX Professional GPUs are the first in the industry to incorporate Samsung GDDR6 high-speed memory technology Bob Pette, Vice President of Professional Viewing at NVIDIA
The new Quadro RTX with GDDR6 from Samsung would be available in October 2018 with capacities up to 48GB of VRAM, being doubled when using two graphics with NVLink.
The next GeForce graphics will also support this type of memory, with all the advantages that this brings in terms of speed and efficiency over the GDDR5 and GDDR5X. Hopefully this more dense memory entails seeing doubled capabilities in the new generation of graphics, something that will be totally unknown until the announcement of the RTX 2080 at Gamescom.
