European union removes geographic restrictions on services like netflix

The new rules of the European Union could remove that geographic barrier that is associated with Netflix-type subscription services. These new regulations would take effect in early 2018. But what does the new law say? Basically, it indicates that online services such as Netflix or Spotify should serve their customers regardless of where they are, as long as they are within the European Union.

Just so you know what this means, imagine for a moment that a person from the UK (at least before Brexit) buys a Netflix subscription from there and travels to Spain. With the new law, you will be able to continue using your subscription and accessing the same UK content. As long as it is within the European Union.

These rules are mainly focused on music or video streaming services, because many have restrictions by location. With this new policy, you could use your subscription anywhere in Europe, within the EU. This is now much more flexible, being fairer for everyone.

But do not get confused, this does not mean that if you hire Netflix from Spain you will access the content they have for the United Kingdom. But if you travel through the European Union, you will be able to access your library from any neighboring country, but the library you have registered to.

Now you can enjoy more trips to Europe, as Vice President Andrus Ansip said:

" Today's agreement will bring concrete benefits to Europeans. People who have subscribed to their favorite series, music and sports in the country will be able to enjoy them when traveling in Europe. It is an important new step in breaking down the barriers in the digital single market . ”

There are still pending questions such as what would happen to multi-user accounts. But we will see.
