There's a new buzz out there hanging around saying AMD may be planning a new generation of motherboards for Ryzen Threadripper 2000 processors. The members of the board of directors would present the X499 motherboards during CES 2019 next January of next year.

The X499 chipset would be completely new and not an update to the X399

X499 motherboards appear on the scene and could come out in early 2019. However, it is not yet known what the improvements that will come to the platform consist of. We might think that PCI Express Gen 4 could be introduced with the Vega update in mind. Initially, an AMD X499 chipset was expected to be released alongside the second generation of Ryzen Threadripper processors, updated AMD X399 motherboards were released instead. If true, the launch would be just after the expected launch of the Intel X599 platform, which is expected to launch later this year.

What is rumored is that it would be a new chip, and not an update to the existing design. In the case of X499 motherboards, AMD will again partner with Asrock, Asus, Gigabyte, and MSI.

Furthermore, AMD would have plans for a Z490 chipset on the AM4 platform, which however has been a continuous rumor for many months. The Z490 would have more PCI-e tracks compared to the X470 and to achieve this AMD would integrate a PLX or PEX chip on the motherboard. As always, take these rumors with tweezers until an official confirmation.
